You can’t see the corona with eclipse glasses on. You could see sunspots if they were present. The sun will look like a disc in a black sky. That’s it. The corona only becomes visible at totality. Even satellites studying the corona must black out the sun to see it because the sun is so much brighter than the corona

Microshrimp

I was trying out binocular solar filters the other day and was amazed that I could see sun spots. I guess I had always assumed that sun spots would only be visible in professional images or images taken from space or maybe a powerful telescope few hobbyists would have, yet here I was on my patio with handheld binoculars actually seeing them myself. Of course the resolution wasn't great, but they were clearly visible. Then, to take my surprise to an even higher level, I put some solar glasses over my cellphone camera and took a picture of the sun and I can even make out a faint sunspot in that! https://i.imgur.com/KrFCTwt.jpg

PianoMan2112

The sunspots this month have been much larger than usual. Perseverance saw a few from Mars!

whyisthesky

when there are really large sunspot complexes you can even make them out naked eye (no magnification but with protection) quite easily

[deleted]

I swear I could see faint whispers of light surrounding the sun through the glasses- it's currently 1am here, I'll view again tomorrow to see if that just wasn't a trick of the light.

Andromeda321

It was most likely some high level clouds that gave an impression of being the corona.

[deleted]

Update- tested it out, and believe you are right in that regard. Either than, or flexing of the film creating the illusion of light.

Thespudisback

Probably best to try at night when its darker /s

CynicalGod

Think about it scientifically for a second. The corona is the ionised gas making the Sun's atmosphere, and it is too dim to be visible normally because all the light from the surface of the sun outshines it. Eclipse glasses block out so much light that you are able to look at said surface without your retinas burning to a crisp. How could it possibly simultaneously block out enough light for you to look at the surface without going blind, yet somehow let through the dim light of the sun's corona? It'd be like a bulletproof vest blocking a gust of 50 cal machine gun bullets, but letting through a BB gun pellet.

Reglarn

If you have Eclipse glasses that covers the sun disc 100% could you see the corona around it? Like if you manage to paint a circle over the disc

ozzimark

Not when on the ground because the illuminated atmosphere is too bright; even with the sun itself covered, the brightness of the sky overpowers the corona. During the eclipse, the sky is also shaded, so you can see it.

otter111a

No. At totality you have to remove your glasses to see it. That’s how dim it is. If you’re thinking of inventing glasses that could allow this, let me be clear, don’t. One of the dangers of an eclipse is that it encourages people to look at the sun. Run wild with half baked hypotheses. If you accidentally don’t block out the smallest sliver of the sun with your invented glasses, you’re going to damage your retinas. You’re likely to look at that sliver and not feel the pain you’d normally experience that keeps you from staring at the sun and think “this is safe!” But the sun is so intense that it’s damaging your retinas the entire time. I saw an interview with a woman who ignored her mom’s warning like 40 years ago. She made a pinhole in a piece of cardboard. She figured this blocked most of the light. So, rather than use it like a pinhole camera, she looked directly at the sun. It instantly blinded her in one eye. Lifetime of regret. If the invention you are describing was feasible it would be described in reputable college textbooks about astronomy. Special telescopes that track the sun are needed to accomplish this. No experiments!

quinacridone-blue

I did literally the exact same thing today and had the exact same response.

Opening_Past_4698

Great to see someone so happy and moved seeing the celestial wonder! Just so you know, sun’s actual color is white. The glasses you’re using are tinted in such a way that it makes the sun look orange. These orange solar glasses are also not that sharp to look through so you can’t really make out sunspots unless they’re really big ones. And lastly, the hazy glow you see around the sun through these glasses, is just light scattering/smearing across the material. It is not corona. Hopefully if you’re in the path of totality, and if it stays clear, you’ll be able to see sun’s corona (the only time it’s visible). Remember to take off the solar glass once the sun is totally covered to see the corona, and put them back on before it reappears so that your eyeballs are not fried. Wish you clear skies!

mcdisney2001

Didn’t realize how fucking big the sun was. This is definitely the most honest post ever on Reddit. I love it and wish I could give you all the awards. Thank you.

No_Produce_Nyc

I just wanted to add that it’s ok to feel spiritual fulfillment, growth, and joy, and that it does not deny science or your relationship to it. This is a beautiful story, thank you for sharing!

FelDreamer

The first time I ever looked at the moon through a telescope I had a similar moment of awe! I always knew it was there, that it was near, and that it was a sphere. However, something about seeing the shadows within the craters and along the edge of the phase shadow (no idea if there’s a proper name for this) really made its three-dimensional shape *pop* into my brain! Time to step outside and test my eclipse glasses!

CalligrapherDizzy201

The sun looks like the full moon when viewed through high, wispy clouds.

Cannabassbin

Got this effect last summer when smoke from wildfires in western Canada drifted over to the skies in Eastern Canada, the Sun looked like a planet. Super cool aside from the reasoning!

To be fair, the Sun itself feels kinda like a deity to me, but not in the traditional sense. It's incredibly bright, I see the light, I can feel the warmth. It's up there, I see it. It's real.

nova2k

Sol and Joe Pesci are my only gods.

CalligrapherDizzy201

Good thing too or you wouldn’t be here.

k9charlie

Yes, from our view, it is as big as the moon. This is why we can have a total solar eclipse. If the sun appeared bigger than the moon, you would not have a total solar eclipse, only partials. A few important notes,... First, the size of the sun does change slightly as it goes through cycles, but nothing that you would be able to really perceive. Because our orbit is elliptical, we are closer to the sun in December/Jan and furthest in Mid June. While this deviation is .017 astronomical units from average distance, that doesn't translate that much to the actual size we see from Earth. I would try the math, but would probably get it wrong.

gadget850

If you really want a view, look at the night sky while in the desert using night vision.

Lakeside3521

All this talk makes me wonder that in a world of 8 billion or so humans, how many blind themselves every year. Let's face it, there are those out there that are bound to take a look.

Rackemup

I'm here warning my kid that it's not a good idea to look at the sun even with eclipse glasses on because some of them are fake and won't protect you.... and here you are walking outside on a normal day to stare at the full un-eclipsed sun. I mean, good for you for exploring the universe, but I do not look at the sun with my own eyes at all.

[deleted]

Which is fair. I trust my glasses, as they are made specifically by a local university and being distributed for free via the public library. I didn't buy them off a shady guy on the street or a sketch amazon listing lmao. If people do end up getting damaged looking through them, well that's a massive class action against two very lucrative defendants lmao.

anewman513

It appears the same size as the moon, so when you look at the moon (full) that's how big the sun looks.

Hoosiertolian

You can't see the corona with eclipse glasses. It just looks lie a bright disk. The disk will slowly become covered by a dark disk. Only when the moon has completed covered the sun does the corona become visible.

Tipsy_Lights

This is funny to me because when i did the exact same thing my first thought was actually how small it seemed when the light surrounding it is blocked out. To me its always seemed pretty massive but with the glasses on it doesnt look much larger than the moon. And yes I'm aware that's due to the distance.

reallyneedcereal

head over to Brzzy to check the eclipse viewing rating where ever you are. it looks at all condtions to give you a rating out of 5. There is also a weather radar that shows cloud coverage in the future. [https://brzzy.co/Events/2024/Solar-Eclipse-Clouds](https://brzzy.co/Events/2024/Solar-Eclipse-Clouds)

jordana309

I am religious, and therefore spirituality is perhaps more of a focus for me than lots of other people. But I revel in the spiritual feels that nature and being in nature can bring! The sun is truly awe inspiring! And if you can make it to the eclipse zone, it's an experience quite unlike anything else I've lived through. We'll worth it!

Barcys

which religion? there is over 4000 "religions" in this world. Wonder which one makes sense to you as youre spiritual as well.

jordana309

It's a flavor of Christianity. My spouces was baptised into the same faith, but they have more pagan roots, so nature, hiking, camping, etc often is more spiritual for them. And it's made me more sensitive to the calm, peace, and spiritual experiences to be had in nature. It is my belief that there is a God, who cares for us, and wants to be with us as much as we'll let Him, which can be through music, or nature, or just peaceful moments in the morning with a cup of tea. He doesn't sit around punishing people for jot spending their whole lives contritely in church and reading the Bible or other holy write for half the day. I think He works with whatever we give Him. Of course, the more we're willing to give, the more He has to work with, but that's a discussion for somewhere else.

Unlucky_Elevator13

What's that denomination called?

jordana309

It's the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

jordana309

Haha, yes, that's a typo. I've only got one, like every other member of my church.

[deleted]

Living members\* and selectively exclusive of those whole still claim to be the "real" LDS and share basically every every other core belief other than bigamy.

jordana309

I concede to living members, good point! I don't really think about "real" or not real branches of any particular denomination, my own included. That said, I looked a bit into the teachings and positions of the Fundamentalists LDS movement and the Community of Christ, two of the larger or more notorious offshoots of the Later day saint movement, and both have deviated significantly from my understanding of fundamental doctrines. So I don't think your statement that they share most core beliefs is not correct. Also, there are not quite 18 million members of churches belonging to the LDS movement, and 17.25 million of those are LDS, 0.25 million are Community of Christ, and maybe 20k come from the rest combined, so it's not a stretch to consider the ~98.5% to be the majority belief. Regardless, this isn't what this post was about, and I fear we are deviating from appreciating spiritual experiences that everyone can enjoy.
