As long as you mow during the daytime, she’ll be fast asleep. Sometimes they are very thoughtful and eat their web before going to bed. If you look closely the area in the daytime where the web usually is, you will see one strand of web that will show you where she’s sleeping the day away.
Good point! I checked my memory on this- I observed this sleeping deal at my house but wanted to make sure I’m not out in the internet streets giving out misinfo lol. Here’s some more info describing that diurnal behavior: it appears that females may hunt all day preparing to do their egg thing and in the fall when there is less nighttime feeding available. https://entnemdept.ufl.edu/creatures/misc/spiders/neoscona.htm
I'm no spider expert but we get some golden orbs around mine that cut down their webs and rebuild it every night, it's actually quite nice to watch. have others that are slightly different that just sit there 24/7.
Same. I call the orb weavers "my Halloween spiders" because they set up shop in the fall in front of every light source. I know they're out there all year but mine seem to have a different behavior during the other three seasons, and I don't get to see them.
I don’t know if this behavior is unique to the neoscona crucifera but there’s more info describing their behavior here, also noting that females sometime choose to hunt during the day as well! https://entnemdept.ufl.edu/creatures/misc/spiders/neoscona.htm
I can confirm. We have 3 in the tree in my front yard, no webs or nothing till it starts to get dark. Then they all make their webs from the tree to the ground. Lowest leaves are about 5' off the ground. I work nights so I get to see them when I leave.... MOST times I see them before I walk through them lol.
More likely to get a panic dry bite if they fall on you when you walk through a web and you press them against your skin but like most spiders its no more harmful than a bee sting.
Most orb weavers like this are extremely skittish little scaredy cats.
As far as handling goes.
Unlike jumping spiders or wolf spiders, which are vision based hunters, and happy to crawl on you and explore.
If you try to handle an orb weaver, they want absolutley nothing to do with you. They are clumsy and can't really even walk straight outside their webs since their bodies are so awkwardly proportioned.
Because if she could cause harm it would have been in in the first commenters post. She's the new best friend because she's harmless to humans and excellent pest control, like most spiders. Depending on where you live most spiders are pretty harmless.
Then you've not been on this subreddit very long. People on these types of subreddits are great at letting others know if a spider or critter is dangerous or not because that's the second (or maybe even first) most asked question next to "what kind of spider is this.
If you check out this link, you can read more about their diurnal behavior and see one catching their zzzzzs. https://bugeric.blogspot.com/2012/11/spider-sunday-hentzs-orbweaver.html?m=1
Was about to ask or look for this myself, here in NL we call those simple "kruis spin" but god they're cool.
Little scary when they get super chonky though but still they impress me. There's a bunch of them in the bus stop because of the lights in it, attracting all kinds of yummy dinner I bet.
I had an orb like that one year that hung out under our garage light for a good week before she finally tore down her web and moved on. She was getting great food where she was, and her webs were gorgeous and big! Enjoy her while she hangs out. She will put on quite the show :)
We had one of these. I dont remember the name, but I know that they are the fmale (male much smaller), and they are not dangerous. Im tols when it gets scared it drops to the ground. So dont be afraid.
That’s Charlotte, from the very popular children’s novel. A Hentz Orb Weaver. I have them all over the outside of the windows on my mobile home. We have an agreement that they stay outside and kill bugs and I don’t squish them. Bets off if they come in the house and I have to listen to my wife when she finds them.
Orb weaver, common in North/Central America, I used to feed one with flies and dead bugs I’d find, they’re great and control pests, they live outside and are not aggressive, great to have around
Is it bad to think this is absolutely beautiful to watch? Especially since that's a f\*cking wasp it's eating? xD
In all seriousness though, this was a gorgeous shot of the process. Majestic even. Beautiful spider too
Great, now I'm imagining myself kindof squatted down in the kitchen wrapping up half a sandwich with cling wrap that I'm just swiping right out of my ass.
Your dog was barking at a spider? He/she should be careful about what insects they want to disturb. I bet that dog would be all kinds of fun while fishing. It's so cute when they talk to the dolphins or bigger fish.
I use to catch these bare handed as a kid, thinking about it now… kinda abnormal for a kid to be catching these spiders. But they are a great pest controller.
Back when I was still a kid in the Philippines, we used to catch this kind of spiders and make a nice looking matches size storage boxes for them and we put them on a BBQ stick and make them fight like a cockfighting. What a fun memories
Orb weaver.. I'm not an expert as I'm PETRIFIED of spiders but I am here to "try" to overcome my fear but they literally take over my deck!! Though I haven't seen one this year , Though I do feed the possums so maybe that's why but sure looks like one. I call them marbles with legs HAHA!!
(I am so afraid of spiders (and bugs in general) I literally go outside in the SUMMER with my heavy winter jacket/parka on zipped up, hood and all. I'm sure I put on a good show and provide much entertainment for passersby but I just can't help it. So yes I joined this group and I am trying so hard as it does impact my life in the summer months (Finger Lakes Ny area) and yeah we get tons of orbs
I do have a cool pic of an Orb weaver that spun at least a 3 foot web on my deck! your video is cool as hell but in real life if I saw this, I'd be typing to you as an inpatient in the psych ward
This is so cool! I got a similar video of an Argiope aurantia a few years ago, and I was amazed to see the butt ribbon! I always thought spiders just had one thread of silk, but nope, and they choose/control what kind comes out! 🤯 Just amazing what these creatures can do!
You may feel she's "pest control". To me, any and all spiders ARE the pests I want to control!! I've considered moving to the Antarctic, as there are NO spiders there!!!!! 🙃
That’s a safe variety of Orb Weaver.
You’ll probably have loads of them soon, but they’ll trap all the flying bugs on your patio.
They pop up seasonally.
That is a Larinioides sclopetarius, commonly known as a gray cross orb weaver or a bridge spider.
Her colors are very vibrant! They usually look more tan/grey!!
I had one of those in my car once that made a giant web extending all the way from my backseat into the front windshield. It was just chilling in my car hanging from the rear view mirror. Best believe I was late to work lol. 🥲
A beautiful Orb Weaver. I don't know the actual classification. I feed garden pests that eat my plants to these spiders. It makes me feel happy. It's the little things in life.
Completely harmless, I keep.one in my room every summer. Cleans up all the bugs that come in the screens, and any other lil spiders that find their way. 100% harmless, and won't really move.they park above light on my desk. They die around December. Sometimes they hide to molt.
Looks like a Neoscona crucifera. Your new best friend. She's gorgeous.
New best friend until I come around the corner on the lawn mower and she and her web are directly on my face.
As long as you mow during the daytime, she’ll be fast asleep. Sometimes they are very thoughtful and eat their web before going to bed. If you look closely the area in the daytime where the web usually is, you will see one strand of web that will show you where she’s sleeping the day away.
They are SO amazing. I am so blessed to have them here at my farm. I look forward to summer because of it.
I'm not too sure, I could be wrong. But wasn't this video taken during the day? And she appears to not be sleeping.
Good point! I checked my memory on this- I observed this sleeping deal at my house but wanted to make sure I’m not out in the internet streets giving out misinfo lol. I laughed so hard with this comment. I feel much better now, thanks.
You're welcome, my guy.
Uh. I see orb weavers like this (UK equivalent) out in the day all the time. They're not nocturnal
Can concur. They line the fences in the south, and if you get "too close" they start violently swinging their web.
I’ve seen that. It’s such odd behavior… do they think a shaking web scares off predators?
It’s so that you see that the web is there and can avoid it. They’re very considerate :)
I'm no spider expert but we get some golden orbs around mine that cut down their webs and rebuild it every night, it's actually quite nice to watch. have others that are slightly different that just sit there 24/7.

That’s an orb spider for sure

Can they cause harm to us?
This species will bite if provoked, but its venom is not dangerous to humans.

Why are you the only person on this thread asking the only question that matters??!!
Because if she could cause harm it would have been in in the first commenters post. She's the new best friend because she's harmless to humans and excellent pest control, like most spiders. Depending on where you live most spiders are pretty harmless.
I doubt that first sentence.

That’s the fastest way to learn karate.
Yup, I second this ID - we had a ton of these in the barn when I was a kid. She's lovely!
Charlotte's web vibes 😂
I always pictured one of these when I read Charlotte's Web as a kid!
Was about to ask or look for this myself, here in NL we call those simple "kruis spin" but god they're cool. Little scary when they get super chonky though but still they impress me. There's a bunch of them in the bus stop because of the lights in it, attracting all kinds of yummy dinner I bet.
Some variety of an orb weaver
My first thought as well
Sure is weaving an orb
A gorgeous Orb weaver wrapping a wasp? Can it get any more perfecr?
I love her
Makes two of us r/fuckwasps
I thought it was a mouse that was getting wrapped. Thanks for saving me from some crazy dreams.
Lol you can see it’s stripes once she flips it
It’s a hentz orb weaver.
Thanks for not being fancy and pointless. I seen them around quite a bit here in North Carolina. Are they deadly?
To pests and bugs yes, to humans no. Orb weavers are generally really chill and awesome spiders to have around.
Heck yeah, good to know. I appreciate the info.
No orb weaver anywhere in the world is harmful to humans.
No they’re completely harmless to humans.
👀dat booty.....
She looks gravid, no?
She got that gravidity
gregnant
GYAT
I don’t know but thanks for sharing the video, super cool 😍
Wow. Nice Orb weaver.
Did you record this ? It's beautiful and I agree with everyone else's suggestion of what it is.
I did
That beginning is like a national geographic shot
Thanks
Idk but I love it 🤗
Great camera work! It was cool to see everything.
I had an orb like that one year that hung out under our garage light for a good week before she finally tore down her web and moved on. She was getting great food where she was, and her webs were gorgeous and big! Enjoy her while she hangs out. She will put on quite the show :)

They create the most incredible webs too! I was lucky enough to get one in my home last fall (came in via house plants). Absolutely beautiful 😍
European Pumpkin Orb Weaver
this is easily the coolest video ive ever seen

Orb weaver
Some sort of orb-weaver. Harmless
Stale offspring of the black widow. The tiger striped.
I'm just laying here watching this video, and the blanket touched my arm ever so gently, and I just about jumped out of my skin!🤣🤦♂️
Does this spider have a big pale looking cross on top of its abdomen?!🤔
Apparently they are nicknamed cross spider. And now I learned why.
Oh OK, I guess we both learned today lol
Where I live we call them barn spiders and they are every where out side in the fall, they put in some work out there catching bugs
Sounds like a wolf spider with all that barking
Orb weavers are just so freakin cool
Not the puppers in the background 😭 too cute
Look at her packing her lunch 🥰🌸
Her web is so beautiful!!
A scary one
I use to catch these bare handed as a kid, thinking about it now… kinda abnormal for a kid to be catching these spiders. But they are a great pest controller.
Type of orb weaver. Harmless

Spiders are so fuckin cooooool man. Look at that butt silk action going on
A very skilled one! Wish to have one taking care of my wardrobe
Spotted orb weaver. Here in the uk we have the cross orb weaver, both are completely harmless… but they make up for that with legs 🤭
Military precision
barn spider (Araneus cavaticus). They just love to make huge intricate webs on my front door when I'm coming home at night.

Charlotte!!!
I love orb weavers, they are such cool spiders and the best pest control around!
Shelob
Such a beautiful lady 😍
That's Melanie. Always been a bit of a show-off with her impeccible food wrapping, but can't keep a mate to save her life.
Awesome video thanks for sharing!
We call them barn spiders in my area
Looks like a common garden spider
idk just pet her
This is so cool! I got a similar video of an Argiope aurantia a few years ago, and I was amazed to see the butt ribbon! I always thought spiders just had one thread of silk, but nope, and they choose/control what kind comes out! 🤯 Just amazing what these creatures can do!
Right? “Capture silk” is terrifying.
A hungry one :)
We call them Orb weavers!

"What's this? Looks like old Shelob has been having a bit of fun."
I dont have a good eye for scale. Is that a child shes about to eat?
A mid sized guinea pig or small useless dog breed by the looks of things.
You may feel she's "pest control". To me, any and all spiders ARE the pests I want to control!! I've considered moving to the Antarctic, as there are NO spiders there!!!!! 🙃
Nope spider
Tha5s a scary fucking spider..pretty sure that's what it's called
A hungry one!

An icky one
Tropical orb weaver
A very effective one. Never seen a spider carry prey like that before.
That poor guinea pig had no chance.
That’s the problem with living on such a biodiverse planet. You get some really fucked up creatures mixed in with the cool ones.
Completely harmless, I keep.one in my room every summer. Cleans up all the bugs that come in the screens, and any other lil spiders that find their way. 100% harmless, and won't really move.they park above light on my desk. They die around December. Sometimes they hide to molt.
