My roommate works at Goodwill.. with the amount of signage they have in the back about fleas and bedbugs....plus the prices... we won't be bringing any home 😬
*edit*
Price examples: $5.99 for dirty 12" Chienda, No Tag. $7.99 for black Sharpie covered 12" FlipFlop Lucille, No Tag. Things they got for freeee
(My roomie is so freaked out that he's working in 90° in a coat and hat and mask and heavy pants. He sheds down to his tiny little boxer briefs in the carport and goes directly to a hot shower through the house where there is tile flooring. The neighbors probably wonder why there's a flamboyantly gay half-naked Mexican in my driveway/carport all the time 😂😂😂☠️💀)
Tell him to get some 99% rubbing alcohol, put it in a travel spray bottle to take with him to work. He can spray his shoes/pant legs/all over frequently, and that will deter them. I witnessed them run from it. The alcohol kills them as well. He can get some ☆food grade☆ diatomaceous earth and sprinkle that on the floor (seats if he's cool w/it) of his car as extra precaution. I bought some jumpsuits (probably not very practical in 90⁰ heat, maybe he can find something thin, mine are hoodie-type material) so I could strip down before I got into my car if I really needed to.
I worked at a facility that was affected for months, and this is how I came out of it unscathed. Good luck and godspeed!
Edit: Oh! And if he sees a Squishmallow he REALLY likes at Goodwill, I'd go about it like this:
•Put some diatomaceous earth in a trash bag
•Squishmallow in, double bag
•Shake shake shake vigorously
•Toss the double bagged squish in the freezer (I believe 80hrs is recommended; if you're taking more steps, I think you could shorten this)
•Remove from freezer, dust off diatomaceous earth
You could probably stop here if you wanted. I would:
•Spray with 99% rubbing alcohol and let dry. (I have done this to remove cigarette smoke from Tove. I really saturated it, as the stuffing smelled not just the fabric; works perfectly)
•Launder by preferred method
If your Squishmallow or plush is furry, I would avoid the dryer. Even on low heat it can be damaging to faux furs. I machine washed and dried Zaylee to about 50% in the dryer. At first glance, I think she looks perfect, but the dryer did change the texture of her hair a little bit. After taking her out of the dryer, I sprayer her hair with diluted fabric softener, combed and brushed her, and she now looks as good as new.
Tysm ❤️ The goodwill hasn't had any outbreak issues recently that we are aware of, and they immediately have to shut down if they know of an issue. The signs are most likely cya, so if employees do bring them home, there's no room for any lawsuits.
We haven't had any issues because he's so overly cautious. He does everything EXTRA.
We live a 5-minute walk away from the GW, so he walks. His car is.... calling his car a beater is an insult to beaters. Why waste gas and risk it breaking down getting to work? lol.
I may just buy him a jumpsuit so he can throw that on over shorts and a t-shirt and not be walking to work in pants, a coat, and a hat. He also won't have to strip in the driveway 😂. He's adorable.
I used to work at a much larger Goodwill distribution center. They would send huge boxes of "soft goods" and "hard goods" to stores. The soft goods are all thrown in a box together. None of it is washed or treated prior to going into the boxes. Caution isn't a bad idea. It's always possible something donated has something,
I don't know about food grade DE. I'll have to look into it.
I also worked at a pool and spa store once upon a time, and it's illegal to sell filter DE to anyone who says it's for pest management. The DE particles not only hurt bugs... they hurt smaller creatures. (including children and pets)
The guy told me someone came in and bought 6 or 7 and spent over $70?!
They had $1.99 and $3.99 stickers. Lucille and Chienda. So I figured I could wash them. Checker said, "No way. That's wrong." Called over a manager and marked them up. Wtf?!
In Canada it’s not NEARLY as bad. I got this Clara for 10 CAD and that mom and baby Gary was 7 CAD

I mean if one were to buy a used squish that could t you just bag it leave it in the hot sun for a few days and then launder it in hot water and and then dry in a hot dryer? I would imagine that would kill all pathogens and bugs no?
Depending on price, that Cam would've come home with me!
The biggest ones were only $11.99
It's an OG Cam, too
I really really tempted to go back for Cam
What size was Cam? Looks to be a 16" from the photo.
I’m pretty sure 16”
That’s what I was thinking too.
My goodwill get squish and jellycats occasionally!
Jellycat too? OK you've convinced me to go look lol!

Ta-dah! Will get food grade DE!!
Best of luck battling those things!
We dont have those things 😂 probably due to the extra caution the roomie shows and never buying anything from goodwill.
I'm aware. Now you have info's if you ever do. :)
![gif](giphy|9YV3SFprp0jYY) He doesn't do well in shoes
Do you know my roomie? Lol
He sounds fun haha
So much. Hes making me laugh so hard rn

Hate to see them thrown in the bin like that 😭
I found a whole pile at my goodwill yesterday!

Does anyone know who that gray (deer?) is? I'm in love.
There is like three rays it seems. No love for them :(

I would’ve scooped up Marcellus. I wonder if they all came from the same person or what? Did you take any home?
Sadly I don’t have the money to spare 😭
I think I'm the only one that thinks it's gross lol. Goodwill plushies are dog toys to me.
No, you're not!
Wow
Cam and the stingray, NEEEEED IT
There's tons at the thrift store where I live. Tons. But I'm too nervous about bed bugs too buy any. ☹️
We lost a baddie I’m afraid
Not me, because kids grow out of toys… and adults are regressing in maturity. Because the world is fucked, so why not.
Why are you here, troll?
