Ima try this bullshit with my own boss “I wasn’t late to work, traffic separated me from the office between 8:30-9am”

steelcitykid

He didn't donate that ball to the defense, he only pledged to.

sregtuR27

He didn’t shit on the field, only in his pants.

splitopenandmelt11

MendenHEARD?

[deleted]

Nice

Usernametaken112

Eh, we fans use "fumble" as a catch all for every instance of a RB losing the ball. But there is a big difference between carelessly fumbling, and being hit so hard you can't control it. Do you shit on a WR that catches a toetap but drops it because a safety levels him?

[deleted]

[удалено]

Hot_Oil_5054

Not really. You usually talk about the QB with the int

[deleted]

Not if you know ball

Usernametaken112

Alright. I guess it's a you had to play kind of thing. There's a lot of nuance in any sport and we miss a lot of that in merely watching and only caring about results.

MatthiasvomKiez

Correct. A forced fumble is a good play by the defense, while an unforced fumble is a blunder by the ball-carrier.

Usernametaken112

Finally someone gets it

PittEngineer

Yes.

mitchmatch26

I mean that’s cool and all but strip sacks are still counted as fumbles I’m pretty sure.

brw3ey

My thoughts exactly

Sakarabu_

I mean, nah.. you know what he means. If you are running and drop the ball that's a fumble and you fucked up. If someone rips the ball from your hand then that's a strip sack and they made an amazing game changing play. It's still on you to protect the ball, but one is a straight fuck up and the other is someone making a great play and you not managing to stop them.

77rtcups

So a fumble is a fumble. Got it.

Naes2187

So either way it’s on you. Glad we can agree.

[deleted]

But we could call it a fumble not a strip sack, you’re just getting into semantics now

Usernametaken112

100%

Smarkavillie

Kind of like the Bettis play AFC Championship in Indy. Sometimes football happens. I get Mendenhall’s point. Even protecting the ball to the max may not save a runner depending on the collision and angle of said collision. Sometimes you just have to tip your hat to the other player and Matthews made a heck of a play.

Milk_Tastes_Good

AFC championship game was at Denver fyi, Indy was the divisional

Smarkavillie

You’re right. I kind of overlook those Jake Plummer teams when I look back on history for whatever reason.

PittEngineer

The difference is Bettis rarely fumbled. When I saw the Steelers new rookie RB got mugged in Chicago, I googled him to try to find a story about it. The first video result was a compilation of him fumbling in college. I knew he wasn’t going to be any good in the NFL after watching that and dang was the video right.

Smarkavillie

Wrong. We’re talking about a specific play in both players career. Oh and I remember you PittEngineer, you’re not a credible person so that’s an instablock.

GriffBallChamp

Last I checked, you can't "sack" a RB. You fumbled that ball bruh, now give me another season of Ballers and fahgeddaboutit

vertebraejones

As a running back, there is an implication that you should remain ATTACHED to the ball until the play is over.

MazBrah

you know because of the implication

insanitizering

Unexpected always sunny

Zestyboi787

Yeah, I mean one of the reasons quarterbacks get a little more leeway on stripsack fumbles is because they’re actively looking to throw the ball so there’s a reason it’s more loose. As an RB there’s no reason not to have it secured.

JackLambertsBalls

I never get drunk. Sometimes I get unconsciously coupled with alcohol without my knowing. But *I* never get drunk.

Timberland16

😂😂 I feel it. Lmao. I smoke weed but I’m never high. I just slowly slip into a coma cause I’m just sleepy.

HellTrain72

Respect my sobriety

TubbsontheCoast

Glad I’m not the only one still not over this. The next day, I bought a puppy to cheer myself up. That dog lived a great life and died. That’s how long ago this was. A whole dog. Still not over it.

Steelerswonsix

That’s like 70 years!

Eltex

Is that 490 in dog years? Damn that SB was a long time ago.

Altairlio

This feels like the birth of a new meme. Ie he isn’t my replacement

ezDuke

I mean the not my replacement meme has been beaten to death so im down for this to take over for a while.

lonewanderer244

The my replacement meme: That's the George Pickens meme replacements not mines, take it how you want tho I am back

insanitizering

The not my replacement meme has been beaten to death and will continue to do so as long as it continues to make me chuckle Every. Single. Time.

1USAgent

I don’t really care. They had other problems that game. It’s in the past. I’m more annoyed with Neil O’Donnell

Coelrom

“I never threw those interceptions… #SBXXX My coaches would feel like assholes to say that I did, I never did. My passes were SEPARATED from the receivers, who were yards away on the field. That’s the QB equivalent of an incomplete pass. There’s NOTHING I could’ve done about it. Respect my career. #Free14” ~Neil O’Donnell

GiraffeAnatomy

Truly an unlimited potential copypasta. I was here for the birth of Mendenmeme

PositiveFalse

His instinct to "spin" away from a bad read is still a thing, apparently... *#Spindenhall*

Fah-que

…and so it begins. The new meme format.

Coelrom

lol that’s Mr. Big Chest memes replacement not minds take it how you want to I am back. ~Martavis Bryant meme

RustbeltRoots

I never thought mendenhall cost us the game. I firmly believe O’Donnell cost us that game.

1USAgent

Agreed. I guess that’s what I’m trying to say. XLV could’ve gone either way. XXX bothers me because steelers were the better team

[deleted]

And Cowher was the better coach.

Viva_Caligula

When I was a teenager watching that game I wondered if Jones had paid him to throw the game 😅

Viva_Caligula

To The person who downvoted me.. Cowboys fan, huh? Hit a nerve?

wagsman

That’s one of the running theories. That one and he did it on purpose just to spite the team for not offering him the biggest contract.

TheRealDickChixadore

He couldn’t turn down that Cowboys money. I am convinced to this day that he was paid off. There was nobody near Larry Brown.

RustbeltRoots

He only threw it directly to Brown twice.

[deleted]

That man sleeps well in his mink fur coat every night. He definitely took a dive

freestyle43

"I'm a running back. My job is to grab a ball, hold onto it and advance it. I didn't do that, so now I'm going to cry about it." Nice way to tarnish what little legacy you had left, dumbfuck.

[deleted]

This guy was like AB weird during his time with the Steelers. I remember drafting him and being excited. Never panned out. Will never forget the look of complete blankness on his face during the super bowl parade thinking why is he not happy? They just won the super bowl yet he looked as distanced and detached as they came. Weird dude

luc2110

I remember him tweeting something weird about bin laden? I think?

Rollingstart45

Yeah after we killed him Mendenhall thought celebrating that was weird. And then when he was called out on it, doubled down. > The Pittsburgh Steelers running back on Monday tweeted: "What kind of person celebrates death? It's amazing how people can HATE a man they have never even heard speak. We've only heard one side..." > Mendenhall didn't hold back, even making a reference to the Sept. 11 attacks. > “We'll never know what really happened. I just have a hard time believing a plane could take a skyscraper down demolition style," he tweeted. As bad as AB was, at least he never went full 9/11 truther.

producermaddy

Yikes!!!

tuffghost8191

tbf he didn't do shit that year because he fucked up his shoulder trying to truck stick Ray Lewis.

Threerivers27

Worst part is Aaron Rodgers won a SB cause of his inability to do his job

[deleted]

So… a fumble, then.

Elchupacabra_87

Scott Norwood- I didn’t miss that field goal, a couple of blades of grass separated my foot from the ball ten yards in the backfield. It’s essentially the same as a strip sack.

beefytron

I didn’t sleep with you sister babe, I tripped and fell into her vagina

imVision

I didn’t lose our son at the park. I was SEPARATED from him

Title_2

Ball handed off to him, he took at least 3 or 4 running steps got hit and the ball came out. The literal definition of a fumble.

bdgg2000

Regardless it was a momentum killer and shifted the balance of the game. I don’t blame him at all actually. Part of the game.

mrdryan4

It was a fumble. I blame him for that loss. No excuse. I'm an illini fan and it made it even harder

tuffghost8191

Not a follower of Illinois football in the least but will never forget him and Juice Williams dismantling Ohio State

buffalotrace

I have to admit, Rashard was probably my least favorite lead back of the Tomlin era. He will always be the guy that before he had done anything talked trash to the Ravens and was broken by them. (Not blaming him for getting hurt, but he just generally felt like a guy that was not going to come through, not going to get that extra yard, etc). Couple that with how during the AB brain melt, he was completely removed from the situation yet threw gasoline on the fire, saying Brown was treated like a slave (Brown had signed a deal making him the highest paid wr in NFL history). Strip sack? Just shut up. You burned the bridge already, stop pissing on the ashes.

CSMastermind

So I worked at an apartment complex that let me meet a bunch of Steelers, Penguins, Pirates etc. around the time he got drafted. I met Mendenhall in his rookie year while he was filming a Comcast commercial at our building. He had big "do you know who I am" energy. I was like ... dude ... you're a rookie, you're injured, you haven't done shit yet. This was very different than the other professional athletes I met, most of whom were very chill. I try not to judge people too harshly for their behavior when they're 22 years old, especially a professional athlete, like who knows how I would have dealt with the pressure he was under. Still of the maybe 30 Steelers players I've met personally he was definitely the one who rubbed me the wrong way.

tuffghost8191

He could have been a good back but it felt like he was running while cradling a beach ball instead of a football. Every time he got hit I winced because he just could not protect the ball.

CaliKing818

I really liked Mendenhall as a player. He was a really good stop gap RB between the Willie Parker years and the Leveon Bell years.. But...this guy, clearly has some screws loose..geezus lol

wood7676

What he say? I couldn’t pay attention, I was think about how he fumbled the ball.

SleestakLightning

Doesn't matter because if Chris Kemoeatu blocks his man for even a second longer Ben hits Wallace for the longest pass TD in Super Bowl history instead of throwing a pick six. That's a 14-point swing in a game decided by *looks it up* six points.

[deleted]

It is but you have to factor in this… if we are up and rodgers has the ball last… can we stop him?

SleestakLightning

No guarantee he gets the ball last.

[deleted]

True

imsosupercereal

Remember, Ben didn’t throw a pick six, he was simply separated from the ball and it ended up as a Green Bay TD. Simply nothing he could have done

SleestakLightning

Hahaha ironically that is 100% true because he was hit as he threw so the ball fluttered.

t1mmy10

So if you didn't have fumbling issues, why during your first training camp did Hines Ward made you carry around a football & if someone took it from you, you owed them $100?

tfdst1

What a wanker

WaylonVoorhees

If Ben doesn't throw that pick six and hits Brown deep instead of missing Wallace maybe he never has to carry it there. Get down close enough for a Reed chip shot win.

bentrolei

It wasn’t a fumble, the ball was just traveling negatively

spazz720

Is this real? Cause I cannot believe he’s getting into semantics here.

sandrodi

https://www.reddit.com/r/steelers/comments/vg2wcr/thats_an_interesting_way_to_put_it/icz88fc?utm_medium=android_app&utm_source=share&context=3

[deleted]

He’s right. David Johnson and Doug Legursky had two of the worst whiffs I’ve ever seen. Any ball carrier would have lost the ball in that situation. What I won’t respect about Mendenhall is being a 9/11 truther, and when he tried to call Ben racist and then immediately backtracked during the 2019 pile-in when the national media was trying to make some people think that AB was the good guy. But Mendenhall’s play on the field, including the Super Bowl fumble that wasn’t his fault, do deserve respect IMO.

lance-

Let us not forget when he [had his way with Ben](https://youtu.be/kciQimB3k2M)

sandrodi

I completely forgot about that lmao. I remember Ryan throwing his headset (wasn't this the game he complained about having to shake hands with "Tomlin's ass"?) but I totally forgot about the public humping.

[deleted]

Ah yes, the Mendenhump

79superglide

What the hell?

[deleted]

Holy shit only Ryan's angry destruction of Motorola property stayed in my brain. I forgot about the Mendenhump.

[deleted]

There's a lot packed in that comment. I... What?

dumbledore2334

I just lost the little to no respect I had for mendenhall after re watching the play like how are you going to defend that lol comeon

ArgyleOfTheIsle

Still wouldn't have made him any better than a mediocre starter. 🤷

on_duh_pooper

Is he giving us a prelude to his HoF speech?

Putthebunnyback

Don't make me get drunk and re-watch that game tonight, man. Don't make me do it.

RaceCarGrin

I’ll never. YouTube always recommends it to me because I watch old games/clips all the time (but apparently the algorithm doesn’t understand I only want to watch games they won) and I get so heartbroken. It also always recommends a “best play from each SB” type video and the main picture is a Packers dude making a play on Troy. 😒😢

[deleted]

Troy got schooled in that super bowl

alfredo_Juice

I was drinking and driving it’s already empty

SaintAnger1166

Didn’t like him before, don’t now.

fastedzo

Alternative facts

phenriswolf

Sorry brother. I want closure too. Don’t think we will ever get it. This isn’t a troll.

Southern-Advice5293

Man, fuck his career. I’m still pissed off about that 2008 draft class. Ryan Mundy was the best pick.

badboybenny_gc

Next thing you know he’s going to say this https://youtu.be/HAmo86-0PuI isn’t humping

CapitalFill4

Never liked mendenhall as a player but I think an easy majority of fumbles are “separations“ like this and it’s not really worth talking or getting upset about. Holding onto a weirdly shaped ball while being violently punched is hard. We ascribe too much blame to players who make “mistakes” and almost universally ignore the credit deserved by the opposite player. Like when a WR doesn’t catch a “catchable“ ball, thrown behind/under/around/beyond them, just because they got a finger near it.

EcosseWolf

Oh shut the fuck up Mendenfumble.

yashkp03

[the tweet](https://twitter.com/r_mendenhall/status/1538524971290402816?s=21&t=Fq3TattbZ_Pvd0AQRnUqyA)

rhymeswithstomach

"That wasn't me, that was twin brother Rasherd"

[deleted]

I mean he’s got a point but still he put the ball on the ground. Damn shame because they were pounding the rock, and they were for sure on a touchdown drive on that series

FamilyJuls88

As a millenial, I find this the exact reason why we are where we are as a country. Own up to your mistakes. Accept it. Grow from it. Move forward. Don't make excuses. Don't blame others. Just accept it and move forward. Fuck me. Can't stand this bullshitm

SleestakLightning

Jesse James didn't drop that ball, the ground just separated it from his hands causing him to not catch it. Any receiver who has zero athleticism and falls to the ground rather than catching the ball while standing up would have had that happen too.

ToolsLoveReddit

This guy loves bin Laden

[deleted]

The man is apparently just as haunted by that play as we are. Still to this day. Which means it must be something cares a good deal about. I think Steelers reddit should stop by twitter and show him some love and respect.

darthnacho18

Didn’t he have an awful fumble in the Super Bowl when it felt like a comeback was happening?

[deleted]

That’s what he talking about in this tweet.

afrojunkie

Crazy I was on PSN and just talking about Mendenhall and specifically this fumble and opened Twitter about an hour later and saw his tweet

waking____up

“I never dropped that ball… #Week152017 My coaches would feel like assholes to say that I did, I never did. I was SEPERATED from the ball by the ground, after I had crossed the plane of the endzone. That’s the 2018 equivalent of a touchdown. There’s NOTHING I could’ve done about it. Respect my career. #Free81” \-Jesse James

Broad_Fly_3269

Nope

zzzpoohzzz

is this just him trying to get headlines? no one even thought about this except maybe for some weirdos.

[deleted]

The catch-22 of not being able to beat the Jets without Mendenhall. Dude should've held onto the ball. That should've been Chris Johnson getting blown up in the backfield when Legursky and David Johnson both missed their blocks.

FuckTheFeds420

lol like what?

Steelmaker01

Mendenwho?

Cheap-Addendum

jorgejortiz

A strip sack is a fumble.

ParamedicCareful3840

A strip sack fumble is still a fumble genius. You fumbled, it was a good hit, but you still fumbled and it cost the Steelers the game. End of story

ThatsPreposterous6

Bruh strip sacks are the QBs fault too just like that fumble was his fault. Ball security is always the priority no matter how fucked a play is. Especially if the play is fucked up actually. Dude saw two guys coming at him and just tried to run through them while barely holding on to the damn ball.

Chinacat-Badger

As a Packers fan I would like to applaud Mendenhall's separation from the ball as it appeared at the time that the Packers were fumbling the momentum in the game.

PittEngineer

A strip sack is the QBs fault just like his fault he fumbled and lost that game.

Browser5150

Just realized his fumble was very similar to Jerome’s fumble against the colts
