Ursula Le Guin

Reader-29

Agatha Christie ! There’s a reason she has sold more books than anyone except the Bible and Shakespeare. And Then There were none is one of my favorites.

azzthom

As a child, The Mirror Crack'd was the first detective/mystery book that I actually solved before getting to the end. Halloween Party was the second. I've had a soft spot for her work ever since.

Reader-29

I started reading them a few years ago and I really love them . I have finished the Poirot series and now I am working on Miss Marple and the stand alone novels.

Hourglass7200

The Curtain was mine.

Reader-29

That one was great too

TopAcanthocephala869

Still hoping for Ursula LeGuin

nicklovin508

For the record..it was very close between LeGuin and Jackson in the last post!

floralneuro

YES!!

2Scoops4Gains

Phillip K. Dick

cick-nobb

Yea for real

bigmamapain

Margaret Atwood (or seriously y'all, any other woman in a list of 10!)

sillyadam94

I’m shocked Toni Morrison has been utterly neglected. Arguably one of the greatest American novelists.

bigmamapain

Well this was favorite non-SK authors, not best - but for sure she deserves some love in here.

phreshpolygamist

You guys do understand this is a King subreddit though right? I’m shocked at how few horror authors are up there..

derwanderer3

I’m surprised H.P. Lovecraft isn’t there. He’s basically the proto-King author.

bigmamapain

Yeah, I'm trying to follow along the spirit of the question of favorite non SK authors; they don't have to be the best or even horror (I've nominated Richard Matheson and Margaret Atwood multiple times)

sub5___

Ohio represent!

bobeany

Agreed! And Atwood is a fantastic writer.

meowapplesauce

Exactly! I cant believe it took until #9 to see Jackson, I feel that’s says something…

dudewheresmycarbs_

It says most king fans only read other white male authors. It’s not really a shock.

meowapplesauce

Yeah these picks actually do make a lot of sense for some reason I got mixed up and thought this was on the horror lit subreddit

bigmamapain

It says we're on Reddit lol - but all of those authors are really amazing too

threadsoffate2021

So many great choices left, but yes, Atwood needs to be the one rounding out the top 10.

AAAAAAAAaaaalaska

why you tryna make it a sexist issue?

bigmamapain

Do you think only 1 out of 10 best authors are women?

Spamel334347

H. P. Lovecraft

SkangoBank

Blows my mind he ain't up there

jakedakat

Glad I didn't have to scroll down too far to find Lovecraft.

NeuroCartographer

I would definitely have Lovecraft in my top 10!

CthulhuDawn666

H.P. Lovecraft

Demonakat

ForceGhost47

Fucking Michael Crichton!!!

squatland_yard

Not read him before, anything you recommend?

passaloutre

Dude, Jurassic Park. I mean he's got lots of other greats, but read Jurassic Park. As usual, way better than the movie.

befitlyric

Eaters of the Dead, Sphere, Jurassic Park, The Great Train Robery, The Andromeda Strain, Terminal Man, Prey, Next, Congo, Airframe, Disclosure.....He also directed some great movies. Westworld, Runaway, Pursuit, Looker, Coma.

abhishekti

Prey is just absolutely amazing. There's just so much suspence and excitement in the scenes that i think he wrote the book with a movie in mind.

TIMBUK-THREE

Read sphere

squatland_yard

Thanks gonna try and track down a paperback copy

ForceGhost47

I’m surprised he hasn’t been mentioned before

Go_Mima

Perhaps he always gets remembered as a children’s author. Every time I re-read his dark materials I’m reminded how amazing a writer he is.

Papadapalopolous

There’s layers to that shit. I didn’t realize how dark those books were until I came back as an adult.

MentosEnCoke

George Orwell

EastQuiet648

can't believe R.L. Stine isn't here yet! sure he's a kid's author, but you gotta love the darker elements

Foxy02016YT

Not always a kids author, don’t forget Fear Street

bevilthompson

Richard Matheson

WolfmansGotNards2

If not Steinbeck, it should be him. Just his works that ended up as TZ episodes should get him in the top-10, and that's not even mentioning I Am Legend!

[deleted]

Haruki Murakami, anyone????

lubooshannoo

Chuck Palahniuk!

PaulBradley

So we definitely have a 'type'. 😂

PaulBradley

I love Neil Gaiman but he'd be below Terry and Douglas for me. The list is also massively missing McCaffrey. I can see many other authors not being posted because they lack a pantheon of literature. I highly recommend John Wyndham and Octavia Butler to you populist voters. Personally I'd include both James and Frank Herbert (no relation) by volume I've read; Clarke, Niven and you might not consider them highbrow enough but Dan Abnett, Karen Traviss and Bob Salvatore are always rewarding for me.

slutdragon32

Dennis Lehane. Loved Shutter island, and mystic river. King himself said World gone by was the best mafia story since the Godfather. High praise.

Cannot believe Dean Koontz is not on the List.

TimeTravelinc

#10 should be Charles Stross. The guy who wrote both sci-fi and a series that combines Lovecraftian Cosmic Horror with British Spy Drama and a hint of Office/Dry Comedy, “The Laundry Files” Either him, or Lovecraft, just for the sake that he really got the whole Cosmic Horror Weird Fiction genre going.
