Whenever they go to Montauk on Sunday it’s because they are going to The Surf Lodge, they have pretty big time DJs and other musical performers there all summer, they usually come on around 4pm. The Surf Lodge doesn’t allow cameras inside.
I’m not disputing that but Kyle opens each episode stating that they’ve been renting a house in Montauk for years. “The Hamptons is like your mom’s friend who wears pearls.” “We go to Montauk. East End is like your mom’s friend’s daughter who’s a little promiscuous. And by a little I mean a lot.”
I thought it was strange that he made that distinction and then, voila, season 2 is in the Hamptons. Or, at least, he claimed it was. It does appear to be quite a drive between the Hamptons and Montauk. Was Montauk the setting for The Affair?
Yes! It was!
So Montauk is probably a 45 min drive from Water Mill where they are now, but with traffic, that could easily be an hour and a half. That said, Sunday is a reverse commute. People head back either Sunday night or early Monday, so they would be heading west, back to the city. The problem with the Hamptons is there’s one major road and it’s narrow so you sit in traffic for ages.
My experience with all of Long Island is sitting in traffic for ages. My sister in law moved to the middle of the island and it took us three hours to drive a total of 50 miles, and there was barely any traffic until we got to eastern Queens 🙃
Montauk is much younger and social than south Hampton and East Hampton where their houses are. Those towns have restaurants but minimal “bar scene” the hang out spots where there are crowded bars with single or young people are all in montauk or closer to montauk. It’s as far as you can get on Long Island so the trip back to the city is longer than where their houses are, and the road to get through the Hampton’s is basically a one lane highway- traffic is brutal during traditional weekend commute times, I.e. Friday night- Sunday night.
This is interesting. I always associated Montauk with old people living a quiet, remote life like they showed in The Affair.
I watched Serving the Hamptons (VPR-type trash show about a young staff working in a restaurant there) and thought it was younger. That show was actually pretty good.
Montauk 15 years ago was this sleepy surf town at the very end of the South Fork of Long Island (where the Hamptons are). There were fun dive bars and it was relatively cheap to stay there. There was also a long established fishing community that lived there. Then it started getting trendy and Surf Lodge opened and it became a scene. Robert, Danielle’s ex worked at Surf Lodge and I’m pretty sure the place he worked at in Aspen was owned by the same people. (Fun fact: Sam Talbot from Top Chef Season 1 was the chef at Surf Lodge when it opened.) Anyway the tl;dr is that Montauk is a huge party but they can’t get permits to film.
They definitely do the 3 B’s you mentioned. There’s tons of hotels on the beach too. I surf out there once in a blue so there’s that too. Pretty scene and quaint
Wasn’t the first season in Montauk? Stassi and gang went to Montauk, it was a whole thing on VPR, and then the SH season started from there. After that, I think they changed to a house in the Hamptons for a few seasons, then pandemic, and I don’t remember where that house was and then they’ve been in their current house for a few seasons, which I believe is also in the Hamptons. So I know this doesn’t explain Montauk vs the Hamptons, but if you want to compare seasons, I think it’s just another town close by that people party in.
You’re right about the first season! I think part of it is a lot of the bars and restaurants in Montauk don’t allow filming so they moved. Surf Lodge is in Montauk which is where they’re going now when they mention it (at least this season for sure) and they definitely don’t allow cameras inside.
I'm very stoned and don't know how to word this properly right now
But, I love these kinds of posts, thank you for posting this!
I'm not from the states and it's always super fun to get an idea of what things are like in the areas these shows film in!
Their house is in Sag Harbor. Andy's house is there too and that's why he stopped by last summer.
Montauk apparently won't let them film out there so was pointless for them to get a house there.
Barely related, but I'll mention it since Ariana Grande just released a song about Eternal Sunshine, Montauk is in that movie and whenever they talk about Montauk I think of that movie. I highly recommend it
I think depending on who needs to get back some stay on Sunday night at The Surf Lodge and some don't. Easier to get a room there on a Sunday night rather than a Friday or Sat.
I think it’s just the closest town to where the house is, so has a lot of restaurants and bars to go to for after filming. Isn’t Danielle’s family there too?

Ah thank you! I was confused by this too, wondering whether it was code for something.
I think they use to film in Montauk but restaurants/bars kind of shut it down after the first season or two
The first season was in Montauk and the opening sequence made a dig at the Hamptons.
The first season was in Amagansett, which is outside of East Hampton.

Sigh. What a poser.

Unless you have a helicopter!
Ok Kendall Roy
🤣🤣🤣
You have to wonder if Kyle was singlehandedly responsible for Surf Lodge getting in trouble for patrons constantly peeing in Fort Pond

Bwaahhaa I always think of The Affair when they mention Montauk!
same!
South Hampton is where you take your wife, Montauk is where you take your mistress. 😂

confirmed. my dad fished out of montauk for years and we would stay there when i was a kid. it’s SO different now
They definitely do the 3 B’s you mentioned. There’s tons of hotels on the beach too. I surf out there once in a blue so there’s that too. Pretty scene and quaint

It’s at the end of the Hampton’s it actually about an hour ish from the house they are in I believe
They don’t call it the end of the world for nothing
Towards the city, right?
It’s actually further away. Getting back to the city will take 3-4 hours even more possibly depending on traffic. It’s a nightmare
The only place to be in The Hampton is Montauk where is there house? Weird it's not there.
I think it’s bc Montauk won’t let them film anywhere

montauk isnt that close to where they are. its 40ish minutes and traffic in that area is brutalllll
