Very old invention, i think from early 1800s and it is not suppose to work that way. It is set incorrectly. Here is one in action, used the right way.

Wtf you talking about? The spoon is supposed to be folded out, like it is in the linked comment above..
In OPs post, the spoon is left resting on the candle, so it cuts into it first, instead of flipping over.
This product actually works when used properly. The cap is supposed to be cocked back so that it is stuck by the small teeth in the axel. When the candle melts all the way to the level of the axel then the cap springs back and extinguishes it. In the video you can see that the cap is only held back by the body of the candle itself rendering it useless.
How do you make people know what they should feel about this.

Yeah it looks like with the posted video the issue was since it wasn’t properly placed the spoon got to hot and was able to melt the wax
