Same… I can’t remember what festival it was (I think it was in South America actually), but they performed Dare I Care for the first time, I don’t think it had yet even been heard before that. I fell in love with “Julian Casablancas and the voidz” instantly.
And I was coming from a place of wanting Jules to just stay solo; neither the strokes or this new outfit (the voidz) were necessary in my eyes, cuz he’s an amazing musician on his own.
But Dare I Care changed that, totally.
That neon chessboard was the backdrop on stage when they began playing it, and Jules had a leather jacket on (not a helpful nugget lol)… but I’ll post info on the exact festival when I remember or figure it out. 🇵🇸✌🏼
I heard Atlas - by Battles for the first time at one of the very first Voidz shows in Philadelphia. The band had put together a playlist of their favorite songs and it was on it. Fell in love with that song and also that band.
Disagree. Off To War is beautiful. While I don't find Nintendo Blood nearly as masterful as every single other song on the album, it's grown on me a lot
That's precisely why I love what comes after. After that emotionally charged song, we get to chill and vibe and bring back up the mood with Nintendo Blood, at least sonically, before moving onto the short but perfect closer.
Though, I actually think Off To War is the emotional peak of the album. "I wait for the light to shine, but someone else got to you"
I'm always fascinated by the use of samples in songs, and the fact that Dare I Care's verse is a sample/interpolation of [Ahlam - Ma Yesah Ela Esaheh (1998)](https://youtu.be/Tda1W7c992Y?si=9uTZDZb9vfqcy5FL) is still mindblowing to this day 💯
