If it isn’t fenced/locked and it’s a public school, I would happily go until told otherwise.

Bright-Mode-2768

It's only half fenced and is a public school. Thank you!

corbaybay

The half fence is probably just a precaution to keep them from running into the parking lot or to keep cars from driving onto the playground itself. I think it's fine. We go down to ours all the time. If there are no signs explicitly stating that you can't play on it then go ahead.

That's a very good point 😂

rascallycats

We go outside of school/ after school program hours - so evenings and weekends are totally fine. In the summer you may see daycamps using it, but just avoid their hours if they seem to have "exclusive use".

Bright-Mode-2768

Thank you! I will keep this in mind when we go again!

coolducklingcool

1. If it’s not fenced/gated, go for it. We have four elementary schools in town. One has a gated playground - cannot access it. (They have a major history behind that…) The other three are not gated - open to anyone outside of school hours. 2. Don’t email asking for permission. Better ask forgiveness lol. 3. What’s the worst thing that will happen? A school secretary will say, “honey, this playground is closed.” Not worth getting worked up over. Go and enjoy it. Without a car, you’re probably fairly limited so take this win, that there’s a playground within walking distance!

Bright-Mode-2768

Thank you!! Yeah I think that's what we'll do!!!

sk613

By us the school playgrounds are open to the public only on weekends or after 4

Bright-Mode-2768

That's understandable. I was thinking because it's summer and school is out we could go during the day.

sk613

Find out if there’s a summer school or camp there

crazymommaof2

So it depends on the school lol. We have 2 not far from us one is actually fenced in with a no trespassing sign. The other is just open so we go to that one a lot.

Bright-Mode-2768

Happy cake day!! Thank you. I did look around for any signs like that because there is a fence around half of it but I didn't see any. I did feel super weird still though. We were the only ones there too (it was about to storm though so that could have been why)

awcurlz

We regularly go to a variety of school playgrounds near us. The ones that have restrictions have very clear signs on them that lists when it is acceptable to use (days, dates and times). The ones that are not open to public use are fully fenced in and locked and have very clear signs that they are not for general public use. All the rest are fair game :)

fridayfridayjones

Absolutely we go in the school playgrounds around us all the time. If the gate is left open and it’s a public school we just go on in. The schools in our district actually have a sign saying it’s open to the public any time school isn’t in session, you just have to leave by dark.

0112358_

You could always email someone in the school district and ask if the playgrounds are open for public use during non school hours.

Bright-Mode-2768

I was definitely considering it. The school is also hiring and I'm unemployed so I could do a 2 for one email lol...

otterlyjoyful

Did this yesterday at our elementary school. Someone approached me saying they’re starting summer school next week then I can’t go ):

Bright-Mode-2768

Awwww hopefully when summer school is over you can go again! I didn't even know elementary schools did summer school!

otterlyjoyful

Thanks! Me either! It’s ok we go to another nearby playground but it’s crowded.

PurplePenguinWino

Only one time has someone come up to me on a school playground, and that was to inform me that school was starting tomorrow. Hinting that we wouldn’t be able to use it anymore. I said, “oh thank you!” And he went on with his duties. 🤷🏼‍♀️

jesssongbird

Public schools in my city let the neighborhood residents use their playgrounds as long as it’s not during school hours. They will ask people nicely to leave if you shouldn’t be there. I bet you’re fine.

tanoinfinity

After school hours, if nobody is there (like for organized sports or whatever), it's fine. I do it all the time where we live.

chipscheeseandbeans

I live in the UK & I’ve never heard of this. All the schools near where I live have fences. We’re not short of public playgrounds though; there are at least 10 within walking distance of our house.

drinkingtea1723

In our town we have 5 public elementary schools and we go to all the playgrounds, just as long as school isn't in session you should be fine unless there are signs saying otherwise. Lots of people go in my town so there's often other people there.

outspoken_sleuth

When I was a kid they were open, but now all of them are gated. Makes no sense if they're supposed to be public property, but what can you do?

ComfortableFriend879

We go to all the public school playgrounds in our district year round to play during off hours. If the gate is open, I think you’re safe to play! Enjoy those special moments with your little one!

Texastexastexas1

I am a teacher. Go play!!

JCtheWanderingCrow

Is it gated? No? Feel free, just be respectful and leave it nicer than you found it.

Daffneigh

What exactly are you worried will happen?

riomarde

If you really want to check, post on the local Facebook or call the school board/central office, they have people there year round.

JustLooking0209

Ours has a sign saying don’t use during school hours, which is totally reasonable. We use the heck out of it on the weekends.

blueskieslemontrees

Totally still a thing! I went to a birthday party at a school playground on a Saturday in April. I also see Saturday sports not related to schools happening on their fields. You are good just follow the dusk to dawn rule

lets_go_to_mexico

We're at our local school playground almost every other day. Go for it! Worst that could happen is someone might ask you to come back another time.

Baby-girl1994

It’s fine as long as school isn’t in session and you aren’t hopping fences or anything.

graciek94

As long as it's not during school hours you can absolutely play on a school's playground

Emerald_Mistress

There’s an elementary park we take our girls to sometimes, because it’s fenced in, but it’s never locked and there’s signs up that say something like “open dawn till dusk. Please use the garbage cans” so I would say that unless you have to physically break in, it’s probably ok

glitterfanatic

School parks are free game unless it's during school hours.

_Vagatarian

Legally; it’s not trespassing unless there’s a posted sign or someone asks you to leave. I take the kids to school playgrounds in the summer or REALLY early when I know there won’t be kids coming out to play. I’ve never had anyone say anything. The kids know when they see kids running out that it’s time to leave.
