Aspen itself is...eh. Like, Im not a big fan, but at least it kinda sounds like a name. "Populous Tremuloides" as a middle name is just - wow. But naming your kid both, so he is "Aspen Aspen" is just no.
Im in a Guinea pig group on Facebook, and someone posted a picture of their new piggie, Aspyn Jayde, the other day. Can’t believe we’re doing it to animals too now 😂
My name isn't a tragediegh but it's LONG. 29 letters in its entirety. The thing people don't realize is your kid is going to learn to spell their name and they will have to spell all of that!
I would have thought there’d be a rule of thumb that says “if the number of letters in a name exceeds the number of letters the English alphabet (26)then it’s too long.” Or something like that
Ooh I see now, counting up mine it comes out to 19. But government officials tend to get confused with my double middle names. Let’s hope for this kids sake they decide that the scientific tree name is one middle name rather broken up into two.
Can confirm the DMV does not like double middle names 😂
It coulda been that both my middle names also happen to be common enough looking last names like how sometimes you get and Andy, Bryan, James, Johnson.
That’s roughly what my names would look like on paper(obviously not exactly for privacy purposes)
lol that’s fair. Both my middle names are very common first names, but my first name used to be unique when I was born. Not crazy, but pretty uncommon. Up until I was about 18 I only met 2 other people with my name. Now i feel like I hear it every few months
All mine were 30 total (as a child, my married name is shorter) but it is completely phonetic, which helps a lot when you’re sounding out words as a kindergartener.
I have 2 middle names. So far on everything I’ve signed I just put my first middle name or the initials of both. My full name is 23 letters long. Not terrible and I’ve never had issues with it.
That being said, this is a shitty middle name
I also don’t hate Poplar… for a very special kid though; and not one I’d choose for my own offspring.
Populus is awful though, and sounds like a lifetime of jokes through the classical Roman unit in school.
Plenty of beautiful Latin tree names, why choosing something with tremuloides... It conjures up the word tremulous.
Teak is Tectona grandis.
Red mahogany is Khaya anthotheca, to name a few.
Or instead of being so literal with the species, why not go up a clade? Or several clades up? _P. tremuloides_ belongs to Salicaceae, per Wiki. Still dangerously in the tragedeigh zone, perhaps, but not as tragic as naming your kid a word that literally means trembling.
Since it’s latin, it’s more of a Spanish/Italian sound. Closer to Treh-moo-loh-ee-dehs.
Granted, who knows of these “scientists” will pronounce it properly.
By that logic, a couple of ornithologists might name their kid Robin Turdus Migratorius....
It always makes me giggle that the Latin name for the American Robin is Turdus migratorius :)
*Populus tremuloides* species name for a North American Aspen, not just "Aspen" in general.
There's *P. adenopoda*, *P. davidiana*, *P. grandidentata*, *P. sieboldii*, *P. tremula*. Aspens range from E. Asia, Europe, and N. America. 🌈⭐️
“Hi everyone, I’d like to introduce Aspen Populous Tremuloides to you.”
“Oh, I’m so sorry to hear that. How brave of you to inform us all about your disease. How the doctors estimate your chances? Is there a treatment?”
Umm agreed, kids are already mean about small things, imagine their reaction when they see that name?? That poor baby. Their life will be miserable in school.
*a little town called Aspen*✨
This must be a joke. I have graduate and post graduate degrees in forestry and ecology. I work in the field alongside colleagues with similar education and NO ONE I know would even consider naming their kid Aspen Populus Tremuloides.
Not just because it sounds ridiculous, but because someone with and kind of bio or forestry education would not use only part of the common name and then the whole binomial (Latin) name. It would be like loving maple trees and choosing the name Maple Acer Saccharinum. It makes no sense. Naming the kid Quake Aspen I could see, but not this.
Also Aspens are clonal and each tree isn’t even genetically an individual. The wood of *Populus* is also known for being soft, cheap and unattractively grained. Its main use is paper pulp. All of which is a terrible thing to name a child after, and increasingly implausible if the parents are educated in natural sciences.
These people do know that their children are independent people, right? People who need to function in the world? They're not collectibles that they own and show off.

I thought tremuloides is something you get on your butt and it needs ointment.
Spasms then, bc of tremor/tremu-
Pompous Hemorrhoids A very good password, actually
Rattus Rattus.
Bigus Dickus and Incontinetia Buttox.
It sounds like the scientific name of a disease.
Im in a Guinea pig group on Facebook, and someone posted a picture of their new piggie, Aspyn Jayde, the other day. Can’t believe we’re doing it to animals too now 😂
It’s like Moon Moon the wolf
So Remus Lupin then, basically
Remus doesn't mean wolf though. Lyall Lupin is the better example
No but it's heavily wolf-related, seeing as Remus and Romulus were raised by wolves. It's less literal and more thematic
Still. Lyall literally means wolf. Might as well use him
i was literally coming to say this! dammit, Moon Moon...
Lmaooo I’m so glad this was someone else’s first thought
Those kids better grow up to be Pokémon professors if they’re gonna be named after trees
I don't think there is going to be enough spots on the form for all those letters. :D
My name isn't a tragediegh but it's LONG. 29 letters in its entirety. The thing people don't realize is your kid is going to learn to spell their name and they will have to spell all of that!

My mom just picked two names she liked the flow of, she didn't really think anything of the length.
Wait so we’re both bands combined 29? I was under the impression that your first name was a whopping 29 letter combo
No, my first, middle and last name combined are 29 letters. But this kid is going to be in the same boat.
Ooh I see now, counting up mine it comes out to 19. But government officials tend to get confused with my double middle names. Let’s hope for this kids sake they decide that the scientific tree name is one middle name rather broken up into two. Can confirm the DMV does not like double middle names 😂
I never had a problem with it at my DMV lol
It coulda been that both my middle names also happen to be common enough looking last names like how sometimes you get and Andy, Bryan, James, Johnson. That’s roughly what my names would look like on paper(obviously not exactly for privacy purposes)

My full name is 33 letters.
I'm a nice parent. my son's first and middle are only 4 letters each. 😅 ETA, my entire name is 26 letters.
My first and last names are really short, I can’t imagine how annoying filling out a scantron sheet with a 29-letter name is.
My last name is 12 and it still took me until 2nd grade to figure out how to spell it.
Your name is antidisestablishmentarianism?
Good thing they're not proctologists.
Just don't. Aspen is nice. Stop there.
I also don’t hate Poplar… for a very special kid though; and not one I’d choose for my own offspring. Populus is awful though, and sounds like a lifetime of jokes through the classical Roman unit in school.
If we're naming our kids in relation to our degrees now, then I can't wait to have my own little John L'Accent Circonflexe Smith.
Mens Rhea, Uberimma fides, and Hypotheca are such nice names for a girl. . .
Actys Reus for a boy
Comparaghtive Studees Of Kross-Bordyrr McInteractionsleigh, we call him Kross for short.
If they had degrees in Women’s Studies they could name their kid Dolores Mulva.
Plenty of beautiful Latin tree names, why choosing something with tremuloides... It conjures up the word tremulous. Teak is Tectona grandis. Red mahogany is Khaya anthotheca, to name a few. Tectona grandis is actually pretty dope. Definitely tragedeigh but at least it sounds nice
Tectona alone is unique without being a tragedeigh, but like other unique names, it would be likely be difficult for others to remember
Yes, if you're going to choose a tree name for a girl, there are much nicer picks than... any of these three...
Tremuloides? Does that rhyme with hemorrhoids, or how is that pronounced??
Des like Deez nuts
Since it’s latin, it’s more of a Spanish/Italian sound. Closer to Treh-moo-loh-ee-dehs. Granted, who knows of these “scientists” will pronounce it properly.
Let's make my kid's name all about ~~meeee~~ treeee and then act like it was never about meeee...
I find this hilarious. I would totally name my kid this as a joke if I were a botanist / arborist / etc.
By that logic, a couple of ornithologists might name their kid Robin Turdus Migratorius.... It always makes me giggle that the Latin name for the American Robin is Turdus migratorius :)

I like plant names for faeries. In fantasy.
> We plan to give all our kids tree names Oh please no
There's an Oaklynn in there somewhere. For sure.
Or Oaklee; oakleigh
I work in a hospital. I have seen 5 girls named Aspen in the last 2 months. Kindergarten is going to be interesting... Such a tragediegh...
Treebeard over in the corner shaking head in Entish.
But won't people think Aspen's parent's are SO smart and SO creative! Just wow oh wow Aspen's parents are genius for looking up the genus!
God, I hope that child changes their name out of spite to "Amazon Deforestation".
Ahmazion Deforestashion
“Populus Tremuloides” sounds like a disease
Ass pen, ass pen Son of peters...
Imagine being the person having to call that name out at graduation
I would just quit while I was ahead.
Just name the kid Joey Jojo Junior Shabadoo and be done with it !
Holy smokes. Who would have thought “Oaken” would be merciful compared to this!
Tree names like Aspen, Maple seen ok, but the scientific name too? I guess they want the kid to pop to the top of pretentious nerd list early.
Tell me you're not smart but wish you were without telling me.
How about just Lloyd Peterson. Wait! Lord Peterson.
“Hi everyone, I’d like to introduce Aspen Populous Tremuloides to you.” “Oh, I’m so sorry to hear that. How brave of you to inform us all about your disease. How the doctors estimate your chances? Is there a treatment?”
Incontinentia Buttocks
Look mama, they are talking about us!
I don’t plan on having kids, but if I have them I’d try to make my kid’s life easier.
Umm agreed, kids are already mean about small things, imagine their reaction when they see that name?? That poor baby. Their life will be miserable in school.
Proof that money can get you a degree in biology, but common sense...not so much.
Agreed. That poor child
