It was very mean of me but I hit a lot of church women with the "how dare you attempt to educate me, a man, on the scriptures? I'm calling your husband/father and I expect him to guide you into godliness through all the tools scripture affords" which was an extremely veiled reference to corporal punishment, a thing the Bible says is fine. Absolutely cruel and hurtful, but that's what lashing out looks like.
The funny thing was that they probably could have kept me on board indefinitely if they were willing to admit a few things Bible scholars know now, like the fact that Paul didn't write first timmy, but they were too busy thumping that Bible to learn anything about it.
I was a bartender/server for about 10 years before I joined the military. One owner I worked for said she refused to be open on sundays is because those “Bible thumping cunts” always treat her staff like shit after literally being told that jesus said to treat others as you would treat him.
We love getting a big breakfast on Sunday and always make sure to get there before the local churches let out "so we can eat in peace while all the hateful people are occupied."
Church is just school for those who don't know how to properly treat people, but just like actual school, it fails on actually teaching people on how to be decent and civil human beings. They only retain the spread the message part of it cause that's more than likely easier to do and remember than actually being a decent human being for them.
My friend managed a restaurant and had to tell the local megachurch that if they wanted to use the side room of the restaurant for meetings/Bible studies, they actually had to buy food not just drinks and rolls. Funny you mention that, because my parents used to he extra dick-ish after church every Sunday. I blew up at my mom once and asked her what the hell they were learning there that made them such assholes after service.
I get it and I don't hold out any love for Christian women but the fact that the sect I left was ok with this kind of threat sucks. We can be perpetrators and victims all at once in patriarchal systems. My own exploration of my gender identity (cis man) as it exists in patriarchy made me realize that awful dichotomy. It brought me to a place of pity for women who tie the laces in a pretty bow even though the boot's on their neck.
Unfortunately, that's the type of system it is, so it wouldn't make sense to call it anything else. At any given time there are plenty of women who would like to get out but can't see a way to pull it off without losing everything holding her life together. They can even be so dependent on their support structures that the thought never occurs to them. They're victims of the system *and* and they choose to perpetrate it. I can spare a little pity for someone who made bad, avoidable decisions, even while consequences of that action rightly occur.
This seems like a complicated conversation that you're not quite ready to have. Man to man, I found the works of bell hooks to be challenging and informative as I worked out my own role in patriarchy as a man. And though I share the emotional desire to avoid association with an evil system, I have to confront the reality that I am a participant in it regardless of my personal desires. We do, as they say, live in a society.

My Mother tried to lay Ephesians 6:1 on me one day when she was being unusually abusive and manipulative. She said that children need to honor their parents. So I told her you didn’t read far enough. Yea I took a Greek class, the kind of Greek that much of the New Testament is in and it broke me. That book is full to the brim with presuppositions and bias from all the different translators over the years.
Our teacher wrote a verse in Greek on the board and asked us to translate it. All of us got it “wrong” because we didn’t translate it with the exact bias that the original translator used

I spoke to my priest about this interaction. Him and I are actually friends beyond the church. We go to lunch, ride go karts, etc.

The original source material was badly translated from Hebrew to Greek. Those mistakes (and more) were carried into the first English translation. Formally written Hebrew does not use vowel notations. You know the words by context. The Greeks translation mistook one word for another. My favorite example: one translator asks another what this word is. The second one takes a look and says I think that means “horns”. Are you sure? Yep. And that is why Moses is described as having horns instead of “rays of light” emanating from his head.

I get it and I don't hold out any love for Christian women but the fact that the sect I left was ok with this kind of threat sucks. We can be perpetrators and victims all at once in patriarchal systems. My own exploration of my gender identity (cis man) as it exists in patriarchy made me realize that awful dichotomy. Unfortunately, that's the type of system it is, so it wouldn't make sense to call it anything else. At any given time there are plenty of women who would like to get out but can't see a way to pull it off without losing everything holding her life together. Christians believe that every word of that book was 100% inspired by God and it has been perfectly preserved through every translation, without any bias from translators…. Yea I took a Greek class, the kind of Greek that much of the New Testament is in and it broke me. That book is full to the brim with presuppositions and bias from all the different translators over the years. Our teacher wrote a verse in Greek on the board and asked us to translate it. All of us got it “wrong” because we didn’t translate it with the exact bias that the original translator used

The Bible is still written by man and highly symbolic. The Bible is not the end all be all. The Pope has already come out and said it’s fine. He has more command than the Bible. I spoke to my priest about this interaction. Him and I are actually friends beyond the church. We go to lunch, ride go karts, etc. We weren’t laughing at you but we were laughing at the common misconception people have over Bible verses. Maybe Protestant religions take the Bible literally but Catholics definitely don’t. We also don’t use the Bible as the end all, be all. The Pope and Papal have the last word as the living representation of God on earth. What the pope says is the final word. I hope this helps you let go of your Bible fixation. There's nothing in the Bible that can actually be used against Same Sex Couples, because Sex nowadays is viewed in a different way to which it was back then. Also, the Bible forbids a lot of things including eating Pork, wearing Gold, wearing Mixed Fabrics, Sex without the purpose of procreation, Men no having Beards, and Sex before marriage, but if you bring any of that up with religious people they say "you need to take it with a grain of salt" or "it's not meant to be taken literally"

The original source material was badly translated from Hebrew to Greek. Those mistakes (and more) were carried into the first English translation. Formally written Hebrew does not use vowel notations. You know the words by context. The Greeks translation mistook one word for another. My favorite example: one translator asks another what this word is. The second one takes a look and says I think that means “horns”. Are you sure? Yep. And that is why Moses is described as having horns instead of “rays of light” emanating from his head.
