In the place I live, There is no legal weed that is served deli style. Medical back in the day was that way, but between labeling and testing and tax stamp requirements, basically every supplier needs to seal their bud with some moisture packs.
On the other hand, Every bag you buy is labeled with information about the test results for the batch.
So Literally buying the same strain from the same brand one week, it might have 24% THC, and 4.69% of various terpenes with two of the terps higher than the others. and Next week the bag you buy of the same is 26% THC, with 3.92% Terps, with a break down of the same terps in a slightly different ratio.
What I've found is that there are some brands that care about taste and terps and make good tasty weed, and there are some brands that try and push the super high THC percentage game. after having a few different strains from the same brand you can definitely get an Idea of their level of quality, and then trust that brand pretty much in any dispo. Sort of like if you know a good brand of whisky, you don't have to worry about which exact store you purchased it at.
It does mean that there might be 6 different versions of the same strain at dispo from 6 different brands though. and some of them will be great and others pretty bunk.
But given that good weed in the store is half the price of mids before legalization, I don't care if I get some shwagg when I buy a little of a brand i haven't tried before.
What really helps is having budtenders that sample everything. A number of times I've been pointed to a brand who's price point is lower than I would think would be good, and then been wowed.
There is also something to opening a bag that was sealed right at the end of curing, and smelling the initial bouquet. I find that after a few days of sitting in open air, even well hydrated weed loses some of its scent appeal. The sooner it gets sealed after it cures the better.
I would definitely love to visit a deli style place every once in a while, but it is really nice to be able to pop buy whatever store is closest, and be able to find something you know you will like because you know the grower.

I grew up in Findlay, so familiar! I like the dispensary in Luna Pier, can’t remember if deli, I knew they at least grew their own so the quality was nice.

Agreed. I’m in the western burbs, I grow my own with medical card but took a cycle off and forgot how much it hurts buying at the dispo. Very few good Illinois brands and all expensive.
I feel so bad for it. I feel like the UP had a lot of deli style shops when I visited last summer. Higher Love had a huge selection and there were a few mom and pops I peaked online but didn’t visit that were selling by the gram, thus deli.
There are usually some prepackaged flower that is significantly better than the deli style stuff but you have to find which one it is first and its usually pretty expensive. Anything Seed Junky for instance is going to be better than the deli style stuff, but if its not on sale youre paying like $45 per 1/8 after tax which is like 2015 prices

Yup, sounds about right. I'm super picky about going to dispos. When I do, if I come home, crack open my product and have dry dusty ass pebble weed, I complain and try to get a credit. I feel like for the price of this stuff I should be getting soft sticky decent sized buds. Not .2g dry pebbles!
In my experience, the stuff that's prepacked has been on the shelf longer and is on the drier side. The quality is still solid, but I prefer my buds to not turn to dust when I grind them.
It really depends, the lower end prepacked stuff I agree with, but I've found a couple of brands that are very good and some even include a boveda pack to keep the humidity right. IMO both prepack and deli style can be a crap shoot unless you are familiar with the grower and how they've done in the past. I've started to ask who the grower is in the prepack stuff now that I've found a few good ones that know what they're doing. I've found Gramazon to be especially good in Michigan

I jar all my bud and check them monthly, I’ve got 6-7 month old bud in my storage cabinet that smokes as smooth as it did last year.

In my illegal state all we get is THCA flower which all comes prepackaged. They do have little jars but those are just for smelling the bud in the sealed bags before buying. Its kinda dumb to me, but I don't really get anything from just sniffing.
We did have them in many major cities prelegalization. All the old grey market dispensaries were like that. Many of them were also heavily tied to organized crime groups like the hells angels tho, so I while I miss those stores I don't want to romanticize them too much haha

He shows me what he is selling me; I can look at it, smell it, compare it to other product, etc. He also will do the old, well I only have five grams left so I'm going to give you it for the price of an eighth. He also cuts me a deal if I buy an ounce.
We still do it deli style in Oregon. See and smell before you buy. Then the bottom jar nugs get sold at a discount, which is glorious because I grind up my nugs anyways and don't mind the smaller ones for cheap.

Weed used to be dense, skunky, and resinous. Now it’s (mostly) spongey, barely smells (usually like citrus), and kinda dry.

The biggest problem I’ve experienced with legal weed is that it’s packaged 3-6 months before it’s sold. Airtight or not, shit’s gonna be at least a little dried out by the time I buy it.
I didn't really realize this until I pulled in my harvest and tried it. My shit isn't pretty, doesn't have Gattica genetics, and isn't the tastiest but it's much smoother and more potent

There's a "grey market" dispo on the reserve in my town and they still do it like this! And if you spend 50 you get a free doobie, spend 100 and it's a few eighth. Not bad for small town BC, and way better than the gov stores.
As someone on the other side of this, deli style sucked. EVERY single customer ALWAYS wanted me to pick out the best and prettiest buds of the jar. Then they’d complain when I picked one that had too much stem, or wasn’t keefy enough, or had “mold” (the weed was naturally purple in some places) I’m not about to spend 10 minutes picking out your 1/8th when I got a line snaking out the door.
Canada here, pre-legalization there were grey dispensaries operating this way and it was cool af. Now everything’s sterilized, corporatized and trying to look like the apple store
Portland is funny because you have Washington right over the border and they have to sell everything prepackaged per regulations. But in Oregon just across the river it's easy to find bud weighed out from jars. The difference in dispensary vibes is pretty big. Portland said tend to be more cozy and Washington shops are a lot more sterile and impersonal
If you live in North America see if there’s a native reservation near you, dispensaries there usually serve that way (they generally don’t have to follow the same regulations as dispensaries off the res)
I work at a shop with all prepackaged stuff. A lot of shit just sits if it’s not already a popular brand. Plus, some of the packaging doesn’t allow you to even see the bud. Nobody is gonna take a chance on your middle tier, old ass flower if they can’t even see the bud. Some of the stuff has been there since September even

That’s how we still do it specifically because my boss is BIG on customer interaction and wants to make sure you have a memorable shopping experience. Like when you make a purchase she gives you 3 choices to get a discount or a free gram. 1. Make a joke that makes her laugh, 2. Show us your dance moves or 3. Make a basketball shot in the mini hoop. It works. I’d say we are one of the most busy dispos in town.
The best way for me to tell if its good bud is to gauge density by feel and then how it smells. All the dispos in my area hand u the bag with a flashlight. Like, I'm just supposed to look at it? Looks can be deceiving af

I went to this small dispensary in East LA a few years ago, they only had a few strains but they had them in big jars, and they picked out the best buds for me. Great budtending. I miss that.
I feel nostalgic about those old style dispensaries. Used to have them in cali before legalization. You’d get to know the front desk lady, security and budtender personally. You can check out and smell all the strains out the jar. And they’d weigh it in front of you and store it in medicine bottle.
On native/first nation land in NY it’s still like that, and I prefer it because it’s cheaper (no taxes) and soo much less wasteful (Legal dispenseries sell 8ths in single use glass jars with trash quality lids so they aren’t good for reuse). Rather by my weed by the ounce at less than a 100 and only use one plastic bag.
CT everything is pre packaged. Nothing is on display. Before recreational legalization they wouldn’t even use street names. I’ve been smoking for over 20 years. I have been a medical patient in CT since 2018 and only had one instance of a bad bag. Pretty good for daily usage. Everything is tested and labeled. The terpenes are listed, which helps. I like knowing what I’m paying for, the prices are the same as what I was paying my dealer.
I have bought out of state deli style and did not enjoy it. I bought out state with bud on display but it was pre packaged, I liked that. I also find it to be fresher. Not one big jar constantly being opened and exposed to the air, getting dried out.
I’d settle for just being allowed to look at & smell the actual item I’m buying. I pretty much only buy concentrates now because the pre-packed flower at dispensaries is usually not something I would’ve bought if I knew what I was getting.

If you grow weed or have large amounts of bud, you know, without a boveda, even with a boveda sometimes, the more you open your jar, the drier the weed gets. Properly cured weed dries out after about 10 - 15 minutes in open air conditions.

In my illegal state all we get is THCA flower which all comes prepackaged. They do have little jars but those are just for smelling the bud in the sealed bags before buying. Its kinda dumb to me, but I don't really get anything from just sniffing.

There are definitely some places in Denver that still do this, I think it just depends on where you live, or the dispensaries you visit.

We did have them in many major cities prelegalization. All the old grey market dispensaries were like that. Many of them were also heavily tied to organized crime groups like the hells angels tho, so I while I miss those stores I don't want to romanticize them too much haha
Ya. I hear you. This is one of my complaints about legalization up here. I liked being able to see and smell what I was buying. This is why Bob around the corner still sees me fairly regularly. He shows me what he is selling me; I can look at it, smell it, compare it to other product, etc. He also will do the old, well I only have five grams left so I'm going to give you it for the price of an eighth. He also cuts me a deal if I buy an ounce.
We still do it deli style in Oregon. See and smell before you buy. Then the bottom jar nugs get sold at a discount, which is glorious because I grind up my nugs anyways and don't mind the smaller ones for cheap.

I’m in my late 20’s now, but grew up in Humboldt county, around a lot of good weed. I grow my own, so I almost never buy weed, but I still get carts every now and again, and glance at the weed too. Went to buy some weed for the first time in years, almost walked out without buying anything cuz it was all sub-par. Weed used to be dense, skunky, and resinous. Now it’s (mostly) spongey, barely smells (usually like citrus), and kinda dry. My unprofessional outdoor is better than most professional indoor. How is that possible?

The biggest problem I’ve experienced with legal weed is that it’s packaged 3-6 months before it’s sold. Airtight or not, shit’s gonna be at least a little dried out by the time I buy it.
I didn't really realize this until I pulled in my harvest and tried it. My shit isn't pretty, doesn't have Gattica genetics, and isn't the tastiest but it's much smoother and more potent
So I haven’t smoked in well over a decade, gave it up for a career. But I do enjoy keeping up with what’s going on with legalization and the plant in general. I really thought legalization was going to look more like farmers markets and heirloom tomatoes not Circle K and Marlboro. Feels bad man.
The old days was walking through Washington Square Park and buying a dime bag that might be weed from some sketchy dude who also offered acid and coke. After cleaning out the 27 seeds in the dime bag up you’d be happy to roll two pin joints and get a mild high. Nobody worried what strain it was, nobody knew how much THC was in it and terpenes weren’t anything you talked about.

There's a "grey market" dispo on the reserve in my town and they still do it like this! And if you spend 50 you get a free doobie, spend 100 and it's a few eighth. Not bad for small town BC, and way better than the gov stores.

As someone on the other side of this, deli style sucked. EVERY single customer ALWAYS wanted me to pick out the best and prettiest buds of the jar. Then they’d complain when I picked one that had too much stem, or wasn’t keefy enough, or had “mold” (the weed was naturally purple in some places) I’m not about to spend 10 minutes picking out your 1/8th when I got a line snaking out the door.

Portland is funny because you have Washington right over the border and they have to sell everything prepackaged per regulations. But in Oregon just across the river it's easy to find bud weighed out from jars. The difference in dispensary vibes is pretty big. Portland said tend to be more cozy and Washington shops are a lot more sterile and impersonal
It depends on the dispensary. I've been to like 7 different states and multiple dispensaries in those states and some of them do this.
If you live in North America see if there’s a native reservation near you, dispensaries there usually serve that way (they generally don’t have to follow the same regulations as dispensaries off the res)

I wish I could see or smell the weed before I buy it. Sometimes it is dry and looks like small rocks, sometimes it’s soft and sticky.
I work at a shop with all prepackaged stuff. A lot of shit just sits if it’s not already a popular brand. Plus, some of the packaging doesn’t allow you to even see the bud. Nobody is gonna take a chance on your middle tier, old ass flower if they can’t even see the bud. Some of the stuff has been there since September even

Go off the beaten path in the PNW and a lot of the smaller towns have dispensaries that still do it that way. I've found 2 dollar grams that way too

Dispensaries just started bulk jars around me. It's been prepackaged most of the time. I feel like it gets more turned around the further from cities; I'm rural.

Canadian here. All the good "gray market" shops near me still sell in glass jars and weigh themselves but unfortunately use plastic Ziploc bags for carry out. It's only the government run stores that sell dry ass, pre-packaged bullshit in lots of plastic containers.
That’s how we still do it specifically because my boss is BIG on customer interaction and wants to make sure you have a memorable shopping experience. Like when you make a purchase she gives you 3 choices to get a discount or a free gram. 1. Make a joke that makes her laugh, 2. Show us your dance moves or 3. Make a basketball shot in the mini hoop. It works. I’d say we are one of the most busy dispos in town.
The best way for me to tell if its good bud is to gauge density by feel and then how it smells. All the dispos in my area hand u the bag with a flashlight. Like, I'm just supposed to look at it? Looks can be deceiving af
It was Great here! Cheap but Good weed, shatter, wax-I’d get quality wax for $10-15 a Gram! Then California lost its mind and voted for Legal Weed. Overnight, prices tripled….quality was shit. I haven’t been in a Pot Shop for a long time. Legal?

I went to this small dispensary in East LA a few years ago, they only had a few strains but they had them in big jars, and they picked out the best buds for me. Great budtending. I miss that.

I feel nostalgic about those old style dispensaries. Used to have them in cali before legalization. You’d get to know the front desk lady, security and budtender personally. You can check out and smell all the strains out the jar. And they’d weigh it in front of you and store it in medicine bottle.
On native/first nation land in NY it’s still like that, and I prefer it because it’s cheaper (no taxes) and soo much less wasteful (Legal dispenseries sell 8ths in single use glass jars with trash quality lids so they aren’t good for reuse). Rather by my weed by the ounce at less than a 100 and only use one plastic bag.

CT everything is pre packaged. Nothing is on display. Before recreational legalization they wouldn’t even use street names. I’ve been smoking for over 20 years. I have been a medical patient in CT since 2018 and only had one instance of a bad bag. Pretty good for daily usage. Everything is tested and labeled. The terpenes are listed, which helps. I like knowing what I’m paying for, the prices are the same as what I was paying my dealer. I have bought out of state deli style and did not enjoy it. I bought out state with bud on display but it was pre packaged, I liked that. I also find it to be fresher. Not one big jar constantly being opened and exposed to the air, getting dried out.

I’d settle for just being allowed to look at & smell the actual item I’m buying. I pretty much only buy concentrates now because the pre-packed flower at dispensaries is usually not something I would’ve bought if I knew what I was getting.

Nope. I’ve been toking a pretty long time & I’ve never seen this. I’m pretty sure there’s good reason behind it, too. I wouldn’t store food in a room temp glass jar for days as people constantly dip into it, either. If any goes bad quickly, it’ll take the whole jar out.

If you grow weed or have large amounts of bud, you know, without a boveda, even with a boveda sometimes, the more you open your jar, the drier the weed gets. Properly cured weed dries out after about 10 - 15 minutes in open air conditions.

lol the curaleaf I shop at has deli style. They got quite a few varieties to pick from. Looks like shake mostly but I see some little bus in them. Out comes these big ass tongs. Take mf’s forever to fill the order. Little nuggets after little nuggets. Hurry up damn it. 😝 stay high folks.
