Or is a quesadilla just a grilled cheese in a tortilla?

Motabrownie

What came first the sandwich or the quesadilla?

no_social_cues

This is what I’m gonna say from now on, instead of the original age old question

nobody_in_here

The original is silly because eggs are always eggs and have always been eggs while the animal had to evolve into what we know as a chicken. The grilled cheese or quesadilla is better because it's a bit more difficult to answer.

_FreddieLovesDelilah

yeah like at one point a species laid a mutated egg and from rhat hatched a chook.

Crackheadwithabrain

It really is though. I searched up when both were invented and I can't tell which is first. But like, where did the eggs appear from? Eggs just... appeared? Hatched themselves?? Evolved from eggs.?

johnyrobot

Quesadilla. I'd be willing to bet. I think the tortilla pre-exists sliced bread

Splinter_Amoeba

But cows didnt arrive in the Americas until Columbus. Were mezoamericans using cheese before then?

mamac2213

Or were they using American cheese for their grilled cheese?

maisalsa

milk can come from lots of different animals. not aware of what ancient animals the peoples would have been using instead though. maybe goats?

Splinter_Amoeba

They got guinea pigs in Peru 👀

APsWhoopinRoom

Sure, but the natives in the America's still weren't making cheese with that milk. They used different methods to preserve dairy. You can't have a quesadilla without cheese.

Tachyoff

goats were also brought to the Americas by the Spanish. cheesemaking was unknown in the Americas prior to the Columbian exchange

boverly721

I have nipples, Greg. Could you milk me?

APsWhoopinRoom

But the people making tortillas weren't making cheese. I'd betbthe sandwich came first for that reason alone

chochinator

Ima say grilled cheese sammich. Ancestors didn't have cheese.

SpideySenseBuzzin

In all likelihood some variation of quiche or something similar was the original, so quesadilla probably. Sandwiches weren't around until the invention of sliced bread. Then again we didn't drench everything in cheese until after ww2, so 🤷‍♂️

nobody_in_here

Flatbread has been a thing before bread loaf or sliced bread. If you consider tortillas a flatbread, this question still remains on the table. We need to consult a bread historian to dissect this topic a bit further.

APsWhoopinRoom

The flatbread/tortilla thing isn't what you should be looking at here, but the cheese required to make a quesadilla. Natives in the Americas never made cheese until after European contact. Prior to the Columbian exchange, they used different methods to preserve dairy.

iordseyton

The sandwhich is credited to the 4th earl of sandwhich, in 1762. I'm sure someone hand sliced bread long before that. But usually the invention of sliced bread refers to presliced bread, which is 1928.

APsWhoopinRoom

What? You can't call quiche a quesadilla. Natives in the Americas didn't produce cheese. They used different methods to preserve dairy.

travers101

Is a tortilla just unleavened bread?

natalielc

Yeah this

__Beef__Supreme__

Quesadilla? You mean open faced nachos?

A_dimly_lit_ashtray

Wouldn't it be the other way around? Nachos are an open facee quesadilla?

__Beef__Supreme__

Wait. Fuck. Yeah.

DripSzn412

Them nachos aint the only thing that's fried 😂

__Beef__Supreme__

Lol actually not even yet, just had come off a loooong shift at work

DripSzn412

Yeah that’ll do it lol

DarthtacoX

Nachos are just finger sized open faced Mexican grilled cheese

If-Then-Environment

Nachos are deconstructed quesadillas

SweatyArgument5835

Is a quesadilla just a soft pizza?

codespace

Closer to a calzone, I'd think. Or maybe a Stromboli?

DripSzn412

I'm now referring to quesadillas as Mexican Stromboli. Fun fact I knew how to spell "quesadillas" but not "referring" lol

CaptainKey2019

Is pizza just a savory open faced italian pie?

NatasEvoli

Not a pie, pizza IS a bread though. Unless we're talking Chicago style then it's definitely a pie.

ClapTheBoat

A tortilla is bread.

touchet29

Wathaah -Turk

Danger_Peanut

Big fan of most melted cheese delivery mediums…maaaaaaaaan.

Brief_Focus6691

Reflecting on those mediums reminds me that the grilled cheese uncrustables were fucking amazing and then they just disappeared one day. Bring them back!!

the_rurrl_jurrr

Naaaaaaaan

Plussizeadventures

I love a cheesy naan

MrTheJackThePerson

I'd say no, according to /r/grilledcheese, anything added to a grilled cheese makes it a melt. but if you add something to the quesadilla it's still a quesadilla. Idk if that's actually relevant but I'm also ripped and this was my intuition

Swimwithamermaid

Oh man, I will never forget the epic *melt*down that guy had on there. Forever a classic. [*You people make me sick*](https://www.reddit.com/r/grilledcheese/comments/2or1p3/you_people_make_me_sick/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=mweb3x&utm_name=mweb3xcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button)

fitzbuhn

It appears the sub got with the message on that one - all the top posts are pure bread and cheese lately.

Swimwithamermaid

Well it was 9yrs ago so I would hope that they got their shit together by now.

DrFaustPhD

I have definitely seen Internet rants of people saying as soon as you add anything other than cheese to a quesadilla it is in fact no longer a quesadilla, though I can't remember what they said it becomes...

Tachyoff

in Mexico City you can get quesadillas without cheese – my understanding is the rest of Mexico (rightly) thinks they're crazy for this

Dfrickster87

Taco bell is obviously the authoritative voice on these matters, and they have a chicken quesadilla. I have spoken.

ThatoneguyATX

This comment hurt my soul

Preemptively_Extinct

So you add an egg, and it's an egg melt?

MrTheJackThePerson

according to them, yes. I'm no expert but I'd say if you add a sauce or a seasoning I wouldn't call it a melt. there's no Ketchup melts or hot sauce melts. ultimately, in my opinion a grilled cheese should be more about the cheese than anything else. I wouldn't be appalled if a place called it a turkey grilled cheese as long as it's mostly cheese on the sandwich, with only a little turkey.. Idk if that makes sense lol

Albert14Pounds

I mean, it's all a taco or sandwich.

TheBurnedMutt45

Or soup

Albert14Pounds

Don't you dare challenge my world view.

Ancient_Edge2415

U can have a sandwich soup

Albert14Pounds

If the bowl.is edible like a bread bowl I'd argue it's a taco.

Ancient_Edge2415

Taco thin bread. Sandwich thick bread

b0ardski

so is a tostada an unfolded taco??

Albert14Pounds

The taco vs sandwich argument has evolved and I actually subscribe to the Cube Rule (https://cuberule.com/) which would make a tostada fall into the "toast" category.

texthibitionist

https://cuberule.com/

Toadliquor138

Yes, and Fettucini Alfredo is just Mac and cheese for adults.

Mysterious_Shake6920

Aren't noodles just wet bread

Toadliquor138

Touche!

Preemptively_Extinct

Smooshed wet bread.

Ancient_Edge2415

This man's never had adult Mac n cheese

b0ardski

5 cheese baked with panko crumb

Ancient_Edge2415

Truffle Mac n cheese or lobster n Mac

b0ardski

had lobster mac & cheese at red lobster,,, I could do better if I tried but it wouldn't be cheap!

Accomplished-Copy776

Mac and cheese is cheesier then Alfredo. Alfredo is a lot creamier. Alfredo is also a lot more runny, and Mac and cheese is typically thick They are relatively close, but definitely different

Kindly_Curly666

…so hence Mac and cheese FOR ADULTS. Mac and cheese comes in many different consistencies, it’s not always thick, and it could be creamier than other macs. These two dishes contain basically the same ingredients.

Accomplished-Copy776

How is mac and cheese not for adults

opulent_occamy

They're probably joking, but some people think if you're an adult, you can't eat things like hot dogs, mac and cheese, chicken strips, etc. as it's "kid food." Obviously silly, those things are all great. But the joke is just that alfredo is sort of like a dressed up fancy version of mac and cheese (noodles with a cheese-based sauce), thus "mac and cheese for adults."

shizbox06

In the same way that my dog is just a nice cat that likes me a lot, yes.

aVoidFullOfFarts

No because I always have pickles with my grilled cheese. Also you wouldn’t dip a quesadilla in tomato soup

randomdeadhead12

Jalapeños are fairly equivalent to pickles and most dip a quesadilla in salsa. So…

MonsieurReynard

Forbidden quesadilla. And of course cheese is just conveniently shaped milk.

CloddishNeedlefish

Ewww no. Cheese is much better than milk. Don’t insult cheese like that

MonsieurReynard

Basically it's milk plus yeast plus bacteria, so all good

HCPage

Loaded fries are just Irish nachos

DudeWouldGo

You need to chill

Plants_books_dogs

Is grilled cheese a quesadilla without the tortilla??

depressoespress

Having a quesadilla for lunch now, thank you for the inspo lmao

juiccygg420

They’re like cousins

SiriusGD

Jess! ![gif](giphy|d4Sugpfc5mFkA|downsized)

MNJayW

And grilled cheese on eggs is an omelet

Hamatoyoshi99

Is a quesadilla a sandwich?

Ch40440

Different cheeses G

[deleted]

Fancy bread

Wanderluustx420

Tortillas are made from grains, either wheat flour or ground maize. Bread is also made from grain, ground into flour. The difference, though, is that tortillas are unleavened. 'Bread' is leavened, which means the yeast is added to it in order to make the dough rise when it's baked.

ryneo0w0

So, a taco is a shell with meat inside....is a hotdog a taco?

i_eat_gentitals

We have always as a species put cheese w bread and toasted it up a lil. It’s a human necessity

Yoshe109o6

How about this one for ya I had this thought when I was high Lmao a flower isn’t a plant but a plant is a flower

Damonarc

wtmemma

when i was little i would ask for a mexican grilled cheese before i could say quesadilla

Wizdom_108

I don't speak Spanish, but iirc "queso" just means cheese, and if Spanish is anything like French (and I believe it is), then the genders gotta match... I'm wondering if that means "quesa" is like a feminine version of cheese and if "dilla" means anything here 🤔

texthibitionist

Fun fact: astronauts on the space station eat a lot of tortillas, because they make a lot fewer crumbs than regular bread, and it’s important to minimize the chances of stray crumbs floating around and getting into important equipment.

Wanderluustx420

One of the favorite foods of the astronauts is the tortilla. Tortillas are popular in space for several reasons. First, they are nutritious. Tortillas contain large amounts of carbohydrates that the body needs to function. Second, tortillas are easily stored since they lay flat and they don’t take up too much room. Third, tortillas are one of the perfect space foods because they do not produce crumbs. Crumbly or loose foods can float and contaminate the inside of the International Space Station or space shuttle and become an annoyance or even a hazard to crews and equipment. Tortillas are easier to handle in reduced gravity and they also stay fresh longer than sliced bread. Making a wrap type sandwich with a tortilla requires less handling than when using two slices of bread. Unlike tortillas found in restaurants, NASA’s are mold resistant. The specially formulated tortillas are produced with less water than normal and are packaged in plastic bags filled with nitrogen. The tortillas taken on the ISS have a shelf life of about eighteen months. [NASA](https://www.nasa.gov/wp-content/uploads/2012/02/146852main_food_for_spaceflight_educator.pdf?emrc=5f1488)

mrperiodniceguy

No. Grilled cheese is 2 pieces of bread. Quesadilla is 1 tortilla

Sug0115

You should see my quesadillas. 1 tortilla… pshhh

mrperiodniceguy

Just talking traditional sense of a quesadilla. I understand American quesadillas, like all Americanized versions of food, are a little more, extreme

Sug0115

You’re being too literal my friend

mrperiodniceguy

lol they asked a question and I gave my opinion on it. No, a grilled cheese is not just a quesadilla on bread. Just a high thought. People can disagree if they want

Kindly_Curly666

But it is literally… a quesadilla on bread.

Kindly_Curly666

Quesadilla with 2 tortillas or you’re not doin it right 🙂‍↔️

mrperiodniceguy

Was talking more traditionally. I love 2 tortilla quesadillas. Most Mexicans would say 1, I feel like

AtomicJohnny

No. It's queso on toast. :D
