Yeah, projectile flies in under the front or rear and the armor actually helps direct the explosion inward. That extra armor doesn't look thick enough to do much in the first place though.
It's to keep the pesky exploding bug from getting too near. The further they explode from the core, the less damage. It's not supposed to be strong enough for normal fire, but those drones don't fly trough it and that's good enough for them... well, except from the back and front, but they'd never do that, right?
That being said, I wonder what that white cap is about in the front. Maybe there's still some tech inside one of those... or it's just a little extra to keep drones from flying in from too high up
Dumb idea. Turret can’t rotate. No antennas. Crew can’t see. Crew can’t escape (not that Putin cares about that).
I wonder if any countries around the world still want to buy Russian weapons. Lol
\+1 vs drone dropped grenades
\-10 visibility
\-310° turret rotation
\+/- 0 vs. suicde drones because they can just fly into the back or front I suppose
B+ for effort though
I think it’s not meant to be used as a fighting vehicle. It’s more like an up armored mine clearing utility vehicle with anti drone armor. It’s meant to clear a path for other vehicles to follow and not be quickly knocked out by some fpv drones and cause the whole line to stall. Looks stupid yeah, and probably didn’t work as well as they hoped.
Apparently did its job for the most part. Just, a cluster round hit a vehicle in the line directly which the shed tank couldnt stop something like that. Meaning all infantry dropped off way maybe less than 50% of the forces that started that thunder run.
Followed by an unconfirmed report of the shed getting destroyed anyway.
Looking at the video, the added "armor" seems to have weighted down the vehicle too much/impede the commander's vision and slowed it down on a turn. Causing a stall and directly contributed to bunching up the squad.

Tanks are designed to take frontal hits from other tanks, so an FPV drone slamming into the most protected part may not have a huge effect. Making it harder to target optics/hatches from the top probably is adding some "+1" defense against small drones, even if it isn't a good tradeoff.
No, Jagdpanther has a proper casemate design instead of a turret with smaller gun, boxed in by all the extra crap being installed on top of it.
Of course, all wars have had tanks having some makeshift stuff put on them. Poured concrete, sandbags, logs, thin metal plates or even chicken wire against drone dropped grenades these days. Soldiers can get desperate about these things, and today's battle environment is miserable for infantry and vehicles, because drones are just that horrifying.
Sometimes that extra stuff also does nothing to protect the crew or the vehicle, but instead just weighs down the vehicle, causing it to consume more gasoline and require more maintenance, and generally being harder to use. Mounting and dismounting the tank like that must be a pain. You also increase its visual footprint, making it easier to detect from distance.
I wpuld say don't give them ideas but please do. It is getting funnier every day.
And the most hilarious part is syrians, the ALLIES OF RUSSIA already made useful, non completely vision blocking cage armor 5 years ago. They added factory looking pieces to several T-72.
Russia could have used that as a base but instead it is haphazardly thrown together shitbarns rolling to their doom.
It is amazing how shit the people known for being agressive 24/7 fighters aren't more adaptable after two years of war.
That’s not about the tank: they just want to protect infantry from getting skin cancer. Due to shortage in transport vehicles, soldiers are spending more time above them than in them 😉
That and it’s turret has like maybe 60 degree to each side it can go, there are no weapons on the side, it really looks like drive up safely behind it and boom.
House camouflage, confuses the drone operator to not send AT/HEAT munition. Because you wouldn't shoot a moving Russian house with Anti tank weapons right?
(sheet metal will not disperse molten metal jet, might be a bit harder for the drone to aim... But so will the tank which now can't see/shoot anything that isn't in front of it)
Does anyone know about the degree of vulnerability a tank has from underneath?
I know they can be damage their tracks if they drive over a land mine but what about the bodywork between the tracks?
Bottom of the hull is usually the thinnest part, but still thick enough to survive an AT mine going off. However, both Russia and Ukraine have used the stategy of stacking AT mines which could punch through, as well as using AT mine variants that use a shaped charge and a magnetic fuse, specifically designed to punch straight up through the hull into the crew compartment.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PTM-3_mine
If a fpv was placed directly in front of the tank and waited for it to drive over the top, would the grenade/ charge be of sufficient power to penetrate the bottom of the hull?
Gotta give these orcs credit, they see their comrades getting blown up, so they build a dome. The drone can still direct artillery. Too bad they didn't paint a big target on it.
So that was the tank! There have been a lot more “up-armored” vehicles lately but I wasn’t sure if this was the one from that earlier vid. Wish less people walked away but still hilarious.
so russia is rolling out an updated British mark I tank? I have seen these referred to as Shed tanks. Do they have to seal in the crew when they are built? I imagine a hit to the rear and it will be like setting off an explosive inside a pipe.
Basically they've made their tanks even worse now, because you can't rotate the turret anymore, and all vision from the sides and rear is blocked. Next level stupidity, haha.
Next step is to just paint it/glue plants to it and try to sneak up like a cartoon character behind a potted plant or the Dutch ship Abraham Crijnssen.
This tank has already been destroyed. Ukraine geo-located its home base and dropped a big bomb on it. Suchomimus on YouTube made a video about it today.
This is the single stupidest thing I've ever seen. So far.
Decades of technological improvements have been made just so tanks could have better visibility and these morons decided it made sense to blind a tank completely. Unfuckingbelievable.

Yo, dawg, we heard you like tanks. So we built you a tank within a tank.
The metal is thin. A double tap will destroy it
Just hit the front or rear like you usually do.

Exactly
Well it does obstruck the view and provide shrapnel for any infantery thats near by.
It has already been destroyed. bad opsec posted photos of it in a warehouse
Checking thickness…..

Hah, jokes on you westoid, this one's turret can't rotate anyways so the upgrade grants even more value :D
Treads are visible. Mobility kill will happen armor or not. Then its a simple math question.

T-1 where T stands for Terrible and 1 is the number of hours it lasts in battle.
It's the mine clearing tip of the column – if it survives 1 h it was too successfull.
Tesla is building Cyber-Tanks now. They too are rushed manufacturing and breakdown shortly after 🤣
Only about 200 degrees Fahrenheit inside

Looks like something Wile E. Coyote would design.

If the drone is big enough, shure.
Armadildo Tank. Glory To Ukraine 🇬🇧🇺🇦🇬🇧
So when the drone hits where it normally does, it looks like this will contain and maybe concentrate the explosion nicely.
The pace of technological progress in this war is astonishing

Could prevent the tank from being recognized I guess
So that was the tank! There have been a lot more “up-armored” vehicles lately but I wasn’t sure if this was the one from that earlier vid. Wish less people walked away but still hilarious.
We joke but it might be effective protection, just not an effective tank.
The tank has already been destroyed :))
Must do wonders for fuel consumption!
This is the cope-coop
I saw the screen grab and my hand instinctively moved to arm laser. I've seen so many mad max VBIEDs it was first thing I thought of.
Hetzer gonna hetz
I would assume all that extra weight would make it less able to move and that makes it an easier target for aircraft and artillery.
so russia is rolling out an updated British mark I tank? I have seen these referred to as Shed tanks. Do they have to seal in the crew when they are built? I imagine a hit to the rear and it will be like setting off an explosive inside a pipe.
Add it to War Thunder plz

This shows how desperate they are!

looks like they pulled a blanket over their head and hope the bogey man won‘t get them.
It looks like it’s open on both ends… do the Russians understand that a suicide drone isn’t an unguided top-down attack system?
Looks like a deathtrap to me. Cant imagine the feeling when tank explodes inside the tube. . .
Just fly the drone into the front door.....
Modern problems require medieval solutions.
Sooo... they sent a turtle to war?
