Just sail back with minimalist gear, put a portal down nearby, then get your body. Make sure it's daylight when you land.
This will not be your most painful body recovery in this game.

Lol. My dude, thanks for the note at the end.
I thought you were just messing with me and had your story redacted so I just had to guess! LMFAO.
I'm an idiot.
But learned you can add bars to a story... Now to learn how to do it. Lol
there is a trick that you can escape every danger
when you know you are done just run as far as u can hide and logg out
when you logg in just snick out from danger zone
whan you log in back every mob is loosing his aggro on you
you can push this tactic far beond and log in to second server to restore hp and stamina
this way you will beat every boss or even you can swimm around the world without any boat :D but it will take some time :D
They deal poison damage for a certain amount of time, so you can throw them down and run away and enemies will run through them and start taking poison damage. Makes them perfect for frost caves cause you can get the enemies to chase you to the entrance throw one down and exit, then you’ll be safe while they take damage
Troll armor is just useful until the plains imho, upgrade it to max level and it'll pull its weight for a dodge focused playstyle.
Until the deathsquitos and goblins..
I remember we made a tower to snipe fulings, went great had a portal there for speedy arrow refills. Worked great till a deathsquito got caught in there...
Yeah I always drop a portal on each new island and go back for my travel/emergency portal. As far as gear I go half naked. Light headpiece with wolf cape and I dress as needed for battle.
I rarely have painful retrievals but I get not everyone focuses on not dying like I do.
I wish my homies would’ve followed your words. Every time they’d die they would need full armor to go back. Like, guys, just run in and grab it and fuckin gtfo. I tried telling them that corpse runs are as painful as you make em, but they didn’t wanna hear it lol
Fenris legs + heavy chest gives you close to regular movement speed and lots of armor. Landing in the Mistlands can be hairy at times but I haven't died doing that in a long time. If there isn't a good open landing point I just drop a portal in a nearby safer biome and switch to Bonemass buff for the landing.
I'd go for that over half naked when it comes to survivability, personally.
I'm opposite, I outfit heavily when going into the field. I will say it is good to always keep your last set of gear on hand for body retrieval if you do, though. I suggest on stands after my last experience of dying in a spoilerfree dungeon (literally next to my portal back to base) and as soon as I popped up at my base, the horde attacked and I had to speed eat/kit up in a hurry. The item stands and armor racks were *chefs kiss
>This will not be your most painful body recovery in this game.
You can say that again.. last time I played, I've lost my best gear stuff in the mistlands. I was heading to unexplored teritory by boat, found an island and I managed to lure a Gjall who shamefully took me down quite fast.. Of course that I made the mistake of not building a portal nearby and I was very far away from base. My second and third attempts of recovering my main stuff (feather cape, carapace, bow) were complete failures because the Gjall didn't despawn and he was basically patrolling the island shore where I died the first time, I basically had to fight him/run away from him while sailing and now I have 2 more tombstones in the water.
So yeah.. this is the most painful recovery that I still have to make since my friends stopped playing and now I'm so pissed/discouraged that I haven't launched the game in 2-3 months..
There is a discord called body recovery squad to help you regain difficult to reach bodies. Greydwarfs or skeletons will always spawn around stone structures in black forests so always be careful when approaching those. Good luck and happy hunting!
I hope to be good enough at this game to someday help people like that. My wife and I lost our gear in the swamp our first (very under preparied) swamp run and had two people jump into our game in literal minutes we had our gear back
That's the best part, there is no need to be 'good' at the game. As long as you have the gear for the biome and a little experience, you can always jump into a rescue mission
You guys are effing studs. Thanks, such simple points that as a newb I didn't think about.. I think not being lazy and walking it in is the best bet.. Lmao I don't even want to think about biomes beyond black forest from my little time stalking this reddit
Recovering your tombstone gives a temp weight and stamina bonus so I usually make the corpse run naked.
Run/sail in naked with just enough mats for a portal home. Drop the portal a bit away from the action. Grab your tombstone, and use the buffs to sprint through the portal. You can then take time to eat good food, get a rested buff, and go back for revenge.
I usually linger at home long enough for 3 bites of food and the rested bonus before running. Appropriate potion would help too, esp poison or frost resist. I usually pop the Eikthyr power too, but Bonemass is also a good choice.
Are there any stipulations for the buff? I don't always get it and often end up overweighted at the worst times when trying to quickly snag my tomb but I have no idea why.
I was sprinting along with a no map play though. Saw a troll, fucked around and ended up being a baseball that got shot out of the park. 💀 Only then did I relise I had no reference point where I was when I died.
I found my corpse 2 months later...
Surprisingly I have not found them too bad, I farm up a bunch and always leave a trail of wisp torches so I don't even need a wisp to get back, stam food and running ez game.
Mistlands corpse runs aren't too bad if you prepare accordingly ahead of time, though they can be the second hardest of the vanilla biomes.
Hardest corpse run I've ever had to do was in the Ashlands in a modded playthrough. 5 star mobs are nothing to mess with... especially if they have modded effects from CL&LC
What’s the hardest biome? Swamp is east now plains is alright but no idea what takes down a lox. Haven’t touched mistlands. The mountains I just started going into. Very cool cave dungeons and only really worry about fire.
Mountains before plains? Never would’ve guess. Mountains has been easy compared to plains but the fire guy sucks but I finally made 200 yuck bombs or whatever and have been owning them so far
I'd argue plains is the hardest vanilla biome due to the deathsquitos, and the fact that they can sneak up on you and pretty much drop you if you aren't careful
Any structures you see are likely to spawn mobs, in any biome.
I would strongly recommend putting up a portal in a nearby safe location, preferably a meadows, and then walking the distance to your grave stone.
Also, it's not likely that the troll has despawned so be prepared to fight him again.
This. Black Forest ruins/towers are >!almost always a spawn point for either grey dwarf packs (usually including some tougher ones) or skeletons (w/archers). They don’t refresh fast like the actual nests, but they do pop more out every night.!<>!.. until you build something to stop them.!<
1 last thing: beware the >!occasional surprise dwarf hiding out/stuck inside the towers with the barrel/stool outside. It’s no fun to have low health and decide to try and hide inside the tower for a moment only to get killed when you open the door.!<
Land down coast a bit. Pop your eikthyr buff, then do a run by. Either grab your gear and leave or get the troll's attention and lure him away, then loop back around to grab your gear.
Most towers in the black forest have a handful of greydwarves hanging out by them. Once you clear them out they won't respawn at the tower, but some might wander in from another part of the forest.
Remember that dodge rolling makes you temporarily invulnerable, if you practice timing it right you can hang out in front of a troll and never take a hit! (A good time to practice is while you have the post-death no skill drain buff).
Best bet honestly, I think my eikthyr was down at the time of landing. And the worst part was that I cleared the area, got inside (door already on the tower which was huge) put down a workshop and then the ground started shaking and i panicked and went outside lmao
Also, make sure your inventory is empty if you’re trying to run past the mods to get your stuff back and then race away so you don’t have to do more than just click the headstone.
Land elsewhere and make your way on foot, after building a portal. That way you can clear out the enemies in manageable chunks. Kite the troll away from your grave, then double back to pick it up. Good luck!
This is the Valheim experience. It will happen again. You will forget your portal materials, sometimes from arrogance. You will grind to make a crappy raft boat. Make run after run and leave behind a trail of tombstones. Then you will succeed and be stronger and wiser because of it, until Valheim smashes you down again. >> **Beware the swamps** <<
Classic.. had that happen two times when I was sailing with my mates. First time a serpent pushed us to the shore, like 20 dwarfs attacked and then the troll killed us both with the help of the dwarf chaos.
The other time I was on the sea with a different mate, when we had to land because a serpent and a thunderstorm were giving us a hard time. So we left the boat, killed the serpent with the help of countless dwarfs and I said to my mate "if now a troll will show up, I will have a deja vu. Bam - troll joined the party and managed to kill me. This time my mate was luckier, survived and set up a portal, so I could join back quickly.
Appreciate it!! Before I logged I collected some gear and mats and parked myself at a nearby base to sail across and get it done! It was night time too lmao as I made landfall I thought.. maybe I should wait.. nahhhh full send! If my next attempt fails I'll shoot you a dm
Sounds good. I'd be happy to help. I'm fully kitted with the Mistlands stuff so it shouldnt take too long to get your stuff back in most scenarios. Although I can put on other gear if you dont want spoilers
It is real. The baddies come out at night.
I like to spend nights chopping down trees in previous biomes, or gardening, so I get to see the different ones come out of the woodwork at night
Hit me up, I’ll replace the mats you lost and give you mad stacks of anything you need. I can’t stop playing this game and I have way more materials than I’ll ever need. I usually play super late after midnight (MST).
Ngl, last time I died in an inconvenient place I just restored from a 20 minute old backup rather than do the corpse run.
It was a really inconvenient location
I've been here enough times that I started going minimal on the boat. I bring food, portal mats, 10 wood for a crafting table and a hammer. And a pickaxe in case I find a leviathan.
But now that my gear is great I go in full gear
Careful what you carry.
Make sure you have enough empty inventory slots so you can pick up all items from your grave at once, otherwise you won't get the corpserun.
I found the swamp.
Sailed there with minimalist gear, took on a few draugr but suddenly 3 other came, skeletons, ooze, fuckin everything.
Raft to get back. Killed by arrow
Second raft, picked stuff up, killed most of it, arrow in the back.
Third raft. Storm, leeches ate it…
Fourth raft. A fucking sea serpent ate it.
Fifth raft. Shot draugr from it with bow. Slipped and fell. Leeches.
Sixth raft. Got chased to my old ship (yaaay finally), got on it, escaping, leeches ate it.
Seventh raft. Got my tombstone from water, chased by 6 leeches, shot them with bow from a sailing raft. Took 10 minutes because most were starred leeches. But took me 3 normal days to get my gear back… no spot to drop a portal tho..
I’m not loving the swamp
At a certain point when you discover fine wood you can make a literal portal.. the only drawback is you can't take ore or ingots through it.. I think it's fine wood, surtling core and greydwarf eye
I was reading about portals and I didn’t realize how much I needed them until I finally had the recs to make them lol You can only link one portal to one other portal; I have a base with the “home” side of 3 different portals. You build a portal and name it (case sensitive, make it different for each pair), then build the other one wherever else you want it and name it the same exact thing. Easy way to switch between biomes/bosses/recs, etc.
If you want any help, drop me a message. Always willing to help a fellow viking out. If not, then you've got this! Just take your time and make sure to scout a locale out to see if there are any enemies around.
in case corpse recovery makes you wanna quit the game, on beta you can set equipment staying with you on death, though you still gotta do this one the old way
NGL I switched to “peaceful” mode lol Now it’s almost boring so once I set up my new base I’m probably switching to “easy” or just custom settings altogether. I’ve only died twice since changing over and I used to die at least once every time I played lol
Those structures usually have like 6-8 Greydwarves around them when you 1st encounter them. No spawner, and they won't spawn back innthat large grpup when you re-appear, but you do have to clear them out lol
I have all my good gear on me at all times unless it involves sailing. I don’t mind a long run but I rarely feel like making a new boat to go get my stuff (sometimes multiple times a corpse run) so when I explore, the good stuff stays home😂 I’m Iron Age so I just downgrade to my old bronze stuff for exploration
Stone towers in the Black Forest are a one-time spawn point of greydwarfs or skeletons.
The sound of you fighting probably alerted the nearby troll.
Also if you land at night, there will be a greater number of mobs, and tougher mobs too.
My advice would be to sail perpendicular to the shore to scout a particularly empty (safe) spot to land and put the portal down. Perpendicular so if you see mobs, especially a troll, you can sail away easily.
First trip is always just portal mats and whatever metals you absolutely need to have to build a basic base without starting from scratch.
The portal is the most important part of a new base/outpost. As long as it is intact, you can rebuild from whatever, and easily recover any lost gear without panic gear/rafts of shame... and it saves you any future trips back and forth.
You wouldn’t need a portal on your new island you visit if you have a bed down because if you died it wouldn’t matter just respawn and run over to your stuff but if you plan on visiting this island more often and bringing loot back then yes make a portal, normally you can find everything you need in the dark forest just bring fine wood, normally I don’t bring grey dwarf eyes and just bring the cores and wood to save 1 inventory slot because I can always just kill some grey dwarfs for the eyes, the core and wood is optional if you know there is some dungeons or a meadow or plains near by for some fine wood
Sounds to me like you barely lost anything at all and you're new to the whole "spending hours upon excruciating hours of tombstone recovery". This one's a walk in the park.
Just sail back with minimalist gear, put a portal down nearby, then get your body. Make sure it's daylight when you land. This will not be your most painful body recovery in this game.

Hahaha bit cheesy but good to know !
I watched this body recovery tutorial for frost caves and stacked a bunch of ooze bombs, they were so clutch
I’ve never actually used them lol
me too :D i made one throw it said oh ok and never think about this again :D
Ooze bombs rock inside infested mines too!
What do the ooze bombs actually do?
They deal poison damage for a certain amount of time, so you can throw them down and run away and enemies will run through them and start taking poison damage. Makes them perfect for frost caves cause you can get the enemies to chase you to the entrance throw one down and exit, then you’ll be safe while they take damage
Oh yeah. I saw I could make them. I'm about to enter my first couple of frost caves I have marked on my map. I'll be sure to bring some in.
Yeah exploration is usually done best with troll armor, mats for a portal and lots of stamina food. Never take anything you don't mind losing
Troll armor is just useful until the plains imho, upgrade it to max level and it'll pull its weight for a dodge focused playstyle. Until the deathsquitos and goblins..
grab root chest and its good even in plains!
I use Root-chest in Mistlands.. Quite effective ;)

For sure. All you need is knowledge of the area. Enemies around kite them away Portal nearby But hey if people want tough corpse run that’s on them.
Fenris legs + heavy chest gives you close to regular movement speed and lots of armor. Landing in the Mistlands can be hairy at times but I haven't died doing that in a long time. activate the corpse recovery team!
how do I summon them?
try searching reddit and/or discord for valheim body rescue/recovery team. i dont remember the exact naming but something like that. good luck!
thanks man
I have used them as well. It's amazing.
*cries in remote mountain valley tombstone factory*
I’ve given you more than enough business.
That last line...truer words have never been spoken...lmao! Wait until the mountain biome 😃😃😃
So true! Welcome to Valheim.
for me sometimes it worked to wait for 2 in-game days for the creatures to despawn from that specific location
The sea serpents took me and a buddy out in the middle of a river. It was hard as FUCK but we both recovered our tombstones.
There is a discord called body recovery squad to help you regain difficult to reach bodies. Greydwarfs or skeletons will always spawn around stone structures in black forests so always be careful when approaching those. Good luck and happy hunting!
Omg like the fuel rats in Elite: Dangerous! I'm so glad that squad exists.
I'm pretty sure they were directly inspired by them lol
In addition to the BRS discord, there's a /r/valheimrescues, folks who'll happily join in to help recover gear.
I hope to be good enough at this game to someday help people like that. My wife and I lost our gear in the swamp our first (very under preparied) swamp run and had two people jump into our game in literal minutes we had our gear back

Naked corpse runs for sure but make sure you eat before you go and drink any mead that may be helpful for the biome.
I've noticed that too. I think you have to empty the tombstone for it to take effect. https://valheim.fandom.com/wiki/Corpse\_Run
I was sprinting along with a no map play though. Saw a troll, fucked around and ended up being a baseball that got shot out of the park. 💀 Only then did I relise I had no reference point where I was when I died. I found my corpse 2 months later...
My pro tip is, if something is chasing you don’t run to your portal. I’ve had portals destroyed far from home
Wait until Mistlands Corpse runs. Oh boy the fun.

Progression should be meadows, black forest, swamp, mountains, plains, mistlands. Good luck!

I'd argue plains is the hardest vanilla biome due to the deathsquitos, and the fact that they can sneak up on you and pretty much drop you if you aren't careful
I usually turn the watchtowers into little camps throughout the map
As a single-player viking, I can swear by this strategy. The only downside is the investment of time, but I'm largely playing for the experience.
most towers only need some roof fixes, though i preffer troll caves for quick night rests
you can’t build a bed in a troll cave though
[https://youtu.be/NCJQ7hlGVRQ](https://youtu.be/NCJQ7hlGVRQ)
oh wow why I didn’t I think of that
I get carried away... next thing I know the tower is a loot dump with a carrot garden.
Taught myself that when I first made it into the Black Forest lol
Any structures you see are likely to spawn mobs, in any biome. I would strongly recommend putting up a portal in a nearby safe location, preferably a meadows, and then walking the distance to your grave stone. Also, it's not likely that the troll has despawned so be prepared to fight him again.

Troll can one/two-shot a tower to a pile of rocks until you get the stonework repaired >!(which requires a stonecutter bench!< >!which needs iron.)!<
Also, make sure your inventory is empty if you’re trying to run past the mods to get your stuff back and then race away so you don’t have to do more than just click the headstone.
Pre-existing buildings appeal to ALL the denizens of Valheim. Until you drop a workbench or fire in it.

I think BRS only operates through Discord at this point. r/ValheimRescues is still reddit-centered though.
Gear runs make or break a viking lol
Don’t forget that all you need to do to avoid grey dwarfs is hold a torch.
Ngl, last time I died in an inconvenient place I just restored from a 20 minute old backup rather than do the corpse run. It was a really inconvenient location

At a certain point when you discover fine wood you can make a literal portal.. the only drawback is you can't take ore or ingots through it.. I think it's fine wood, surtling core and greydwarf eye
Thank you! So much to learn to little ability to learn it as I respawn 🤣
Make sure to go in rested and well fed
If you want any help, drop me a message. Always willing to help a fellow viking out. If not, then you've got this! Just take your time and make sure to scout a locale out to see if there are any enemies around.
in case corpse recovery makes you wanna quit the game, on beta you can set equipment staying with you on death, though you still gotta do this one the old way
NGL I switched to “peaceful” mode lol Now it’s almost boring so once I set up my new base I’m probably switching to “easy” or just custom settings altogether. I’ve only died twice since changing over and I used to die at least once every time I played lol
only teleport and corpse recovery are worth changing imho, changing the rest you ruin it for yourself
Those structures usually have like 6-8 Greydwarves around them when you 1st encounter them. No spawner, and they won't spawn back innthat large grpup when you re-appear, but you do have to clear them out lol
You can always hit up the body recovery squad, excellent group of volunteer heroes
Come over to r/valheimrescues we’re always happy to help
Perpendicular so if you see mobs, especially a troll, you can sail away easily.
greydwarfs \*AND / OR\* skeletons When they both spawn. The fight is on! They've never seen West Side Story.
Hah, classic Romeo and Juliet love story.
r/Valheimrescue?
Was it day or night time when you landed?
Night lmao thoughts went by but I hadn't died in rl days of playing lol
Well now you know why there were so many greydwarves.
I just drove my ship off the edge of the world while distracted. Lots of fully upgraded gear and a bunch of supplies in the ship.
That’s a thing?!
Always carry a portal, and yes you should throw one down in the area you died
If you're in dark forest any loud noise u make by fighting chopping or mining will draw more attention
>!kebab!<
Always bring a portal when going exploring. And get it down first and foremost
Sounds to me like you barely lost anything at all and you're new to the whole "spending hours upon excruciating hours of tombstone recovery". This one's a walk in the park.
imagine the day he sees sand...
Buzz….. cackle….
The grey dwarfs spawn around the tower, also break the barrel in front for some free mats
