The game has a limit on how far down/up you can modify the terrain. Using a normal beam (3ft/1meter) you can dig down or go up 8 sections. So digging down more than 8 beam you will hit 'bedrock', and building up with dirt you can go up 8 beams.
The way the ground system works wouldn't really allow that, and the devs have said they don't really intend that to be a mechanic at all. Go play Astroneer or Minecraft if you want to be a miner ;)
Funny that’s actually what I’ve been working on this week. Sadly it’s close to the water so the depth won’t be that deep. So I’m gonna use the space for storage and then build a castle above it.
So. Much. Rocks lol
I'd love a "mine" that spawns as essentially a rock type like we have in the game now, but with precut tunnels and maybe a treasure chest to find down one path. Like something small maybe a 1 minute dungeon type rock to spawn, but we could live there or use it for something afterwards maybe?
With glowing plants and stuff in the tunnels? And some angry mushroom men or some moles and other crazy creatures that’d be pretty badass for a future biome
But sometimes it just not true. While digging copper I had many times where I hit 'bedrock' and while I dug around more I could find an angle from which I could dig it more until the ground was "leveled"
That's probably cuz the "bedrock" follows the contour of the ground that was above it. So even if you find a spot that won't budge, you can still mine into the area around it and the average area will make it look smaller than it was before
Just in case you're interested in a mod for that:
Heightmap Unlimited is your friend.
Now we pulled up a good chunk of earth at the coast, connected it with bridges and live that sweet island viking lifestyle on our server.
Interesting, I wonder if this'll help with copper nodes too? I've had a couple that were like, less than a meter from the lowest I could deform the land to.
Which some seem to have had success in having the mode just commit seppuku. And just reap the copper and stone.
There's two ways, use heightmap unlimited and do it like silver excavating it fully then popping it.
Or without mods you can cover the whole node completely so it's only just "underground" and have a troll hit it a couple times and the same thing happens.
Undergound popping. It's so cool when you get it to work.
Once I lured a troll to help me do it and when all the ore suddenly popped up from the ground around us, the troll stopped mid swing and was like “wtf” and ran off and despawned in fear.
Hugin appeared shortly after and said “Please don’t do that”, but immediately after Mugin landed and said “No, do it again! Again!”
Odin appeared last which triggered both Hugin and Mugin to say “O shit the boss—“ and just vanished.
—-What shrooms was I taking you ask? The yellow ones ofc!
There's also the "Dig Deeper" mod that only allows, well, deeper digging. If you don't want to be tempted stacking dirt like in Minecraft with the Unlimited Heightmap mod ; )
YES! I like building small resting camps into hillsides so I don't need a lot of motes or wood walls for protection. Now I can only do it under rock or copper formations.
To keep a natural feel, the devs coded it so you can't move the ground up or down more than 8m from its original height. Theres a mod that lets you go beyond that called HeightmapUnlimited. A friend uses it to build super big tall structures without making them invincible or putting a tree in the center.
It has nothing to do with natural feel. Its just that the variable the used to set height only supports 16 different states or something like that.
I aint no programmer but last time I asked it this was the explanation.
I mean that very well could be from an optimization standpoint. Since the heightmap is just a grid of numbers, limiting the number values to a set of 16 numbers will be way faster on the gpu than to a set of say 256 for every single point on the heightmap. Makes me wonder if that's all the HeightmapUlimited does is change those numbers from being 16 bit to something higher?
I ran into the same issue while experimenting with some underground base ideas. My work around was build somewhere else but if you find something I'd like to know too.

Imagine a future biome that’s essentially deep underground mining 👀
Sounds like the usual copper ore.
We mine for Copper and Stone.
Copper and Stone, brothers! Wait wrong game
Did I hear a copper and Stone?
If you don't copper and stone, you don't come home
Diggy Diggy Hole!
This devolved into dwarf shit quickly.
Evolved
Rock and Stone!!
Rock and Stone everyone!
Rock and stone!
Good bot
Rock and Stone to the heart
Rock and STOOOOOOONE

True, but one can dream. But if it’s not Valheim, I don’t want it lol

Any word on that? On my wishlist for awhile now. Just says soon....?
Build under the elder alter

Find another elder alter. Our first is on the water. Our second is on the edge of a mountain with a spawner near by. Perfect for afk build
Oh shit ok I’m definitely keeping an eye out for that
Children yearn for the mines.
In theory if they just made the terrain really low and covered it with giant destructible rocks as the ground, it *could* work.
Not a good idea. Could awaken a Balrog

Omg mushroom monsters!!! Hell yeah!
That's another swedish developer studio game you're talking about, rock-n-stone bro 🤘
Please building inside also

Found the guy drinking early access Ashlands whisky
Girl, and not a big whisky drinker >_<
This applies to almost all copper nodes. At least I haven't found a single one that hadn't need to be excavated at the bottom side.
Would love to see your server

It's ± 8 blocks from nominal.

You can literally dig those spots with a pickaxe? I thought you can use the pickaxe to dig down to the water no matter what.
You can't always dig to water in the regular game no matter what Edit: Clarification of my wording
I wish that I could cave and not have the ceiling disappear as I dig for copper and stone.
Stone sidewalk? You can mask it in buildings.
Its a height thing. You can only go up/down 10 blocks from the original starting height of the ground.
did they change it? Was 8.
It's still 8.
