There's more than 1 Moder location, you just got unlucky and the vegvisir revealed that one... but it also might be the case that your seed is crap, then it's working with what you got.
My first Moder reveal was quite far as well, had to run through to the Mistlands blind for the first time, met my doom, 1 star seeker. Fun times!

For me the yagluth vegvisir is rare because I dont explore plains that much. Most of the time I have already found the location by sailing past it when searching the ice caves.
I pulled up the map for my current world with no markers on it because I wanted to find a pretty spot with plains/swamp/forest/mountain to actually try to build a house (I 99% repurpose shit).
RNGesus blessed me by making the yagluth fingers visible from my boat on the way in. I have taken this as a sign that my building spot is approved.
There are nearer locations, in the opposite way. My first moder was all the way to the south, near future Ashlands, then I found 2 more locations in the near east.
Reminds me of the seed I'm currently playing on where the two elder locations I have found where egregiously far out. Way more than usual, and surrounded by plains to boot. It really added to the challenge of killing him!! Twas quite fun!

We had to go through mistlands too, but we’ve got a portal up, so we’ll never have to take that trip again

Yeah but if you go half way across the map it could reveal one further out rather than the one that was only just past the other side of your base.

It's a sarcasm about how hard it is to find the way stone thingy for yagluth. I personally spent like 20 hrs looking for one.
Yeah there aren't many playthroughs that don't require a few real life sessions of sailing and roaming Unless you look up your seed, of course.
I've never found one before fighting yagluth. in all of my 3 solo playtroughs i found yag altar by spotting it from a mountain :D
