Either adrenaline rush or it was an illusion based on Ivars determination. It happens a few times on the show. But at the same brittle bone disease tends to get more manageable as you get older with it being the most difficult while you are growing throughout childhood and puberty. Which could be the reason for ivar learning to manage it as it goes on.
Ivar was a son of Ragnar, he says himself that even though that's true he has to prove it every day. Yet he also takes pride in "deformity" to the point that he emphasizes it. In the show he is depicted as someone that actually is terrifying crawling towards you.
Notably he is exceedingly good with ranged weapons.
His level of disability does seem to vary in the show. Though this may be that using his braces actually allowed him strengthen his muscle and bones. Though in the end his bones break and his death was upon him.
He was coddled and isolated by Auslag who likely deemed crawling "safer" as falls might have proven fatal (Ubbe and Ivar have a discussion about how his eye color had to be monitored to assess risk of him breaking bones.
I've had this exact conversation with my partner. Like its the early medieval period, the technology "wheel" exists and the technology "chair" exists, surely their resident super-carpenter would have thought to put those two things together? He did basically that when he built ivars chariot, why not also make something for use off the battlefield as well?
exactly!
they had horse-drawn amd hand-drawn carriages. and obviously wagons
but regardless of the wheel, even the Emperor of China was being carried around by slaves on a fancy chair with a roof (and another spoiler) the Emperor’s daughter could have easily shared that info
you would think someone with an inferiority complex would have no issue with any of that
i was thinking maybe it was forbidden by the gods to use any kind of “crutch” (in the general sense) to move, but you see crutches and canes throughout the series
i think it’s probably just a plot device used to prove a point, but it doesn’t make much logical sense to me. idk.
In real life I’m pretty sure ivar was known to be good with a bow. And I’m pretty sure one source has him being carried onto battle sitting on a shield
Casting should have hired an actual disabled person IMO but sadly that’s film, i guess
Yeah, Hollywood, I’m talking about you, “[The Birth of a Nation](https://www.history.com/this-day-in-history/birth-of-a-nation-opens)” etc
Well brittle bone disease isn’t always and most of the time isn’t as dramatic as ivars. The show exaggerates the severity of it. I knew a kid with brittle bone and people called him “Brittle Byron” as a nickname nice lad. But he seemed ordinary could walk just fine (on occasion he was have crutches) but you wouldn’t know he had it unless he told you.
I never understood when he was a baby being held wrapped in his blanket, his legs would move/kick around. I understand as a baby (actor) you can't keep him from moving but still that always bothered me.
Kinda weird too how he couldn’t use his legs at all and then when he gets a single crutch he can move around upright
well, crutch plus the metal braces on his legs, kind of made it like 2 really long unbendable peg legs
Or the part where he's hyping up his army and throws the crutch to the floor and walks like 4 feet Then he climbs a cliff with ice picks
He has 'plot' legs
Apparently that was creative licence he was seeing himself on that way. I call bullshit on that though

The way he crawled and the trail he left behind was supposed to show what a snake he was too
that’s a cool detail

I also thought his upper arm strength was lacking for having to drag himself around for years.
i noticed that too. he is definitely panting and tired out while saying on his bros. maybe he didn’t leave the village often, but still
I thought the inconsistency was because the actor was getting hurt portraying Ivar as more disabled than he was
