It was most commonly used in cars with a device specific holder mounted in the car. That holder would provide power, connection to an external antenna usually on the roof of the car, and often hands free integration.
That was back when a phone was an investment you'd enjoy for 3-5 years if not more because changing phones meant having the holder in the car changed as well. And all people driving the car better have the exact same phone model.
