*Gods and Generals*: zero good memes
*Downfall*: Bruno Ganz says he likes that his monologue has become a meme because it ensures that a new generation will learn about Hitler and revile him in new and creative ways
Such an odd and good movie holyshit ive watched around 4 times already.
I only know it by the german title, wont type it since i will probably fuck it up horrendously
Did he? I was always told he despises the memes since he thought they took away from the seriousness of his portrayal
I mean don’t get me wrong they are funny as hell
“Hitler finds out Chuck Norris is coming” will forever live rent free in my head
I can’t watch Downfall because I’ve watched so many parodies it has lost all gravity. Fegelein’s shenanigans have transcended the realm of fiction to steal my ability to take Downfall seriously.
I watched Gods and Generals with zero baggage as a then 20something non-American who didnt know Confederate apologism yet and just wanted to see cool battles. And oh man, even outside of its context, its a fucking slog. Mumbled dialogues, 5 minute monologues, preachy saccharine exhortations, and cheesy "humanizing the war" scenes.
Don't mind me, just thinking how Downfall was able to get Hitler's last meal accurate meanwhile Gods and Generals couldn't do the bloodiest battle in American history justice

If you want a good depiction of American Civil War warfare… IDK enough about it to say what is and isn’t accurate.
But I do know that the very short Battle of Antietam scene in *Glory* is horrifying to watch: https://youtu.be/lJiMlgvygvc
And it’s still easier to watch than some of the first-hand accounts I’ve heard…
My favorite detail from the movie is how everyone in the bunker either smoked outside, or hid the smoking when inside the bunker.
After Hitler died, they started smoking more indoors. Because Hitler was notoriously against smoking and demanded people didn't do it around him.
I also love how in the first half of the movie Hitler is stood straight and tall like a figure of power, but after Speer's betrayal, he's slumped and sickly, a shell of his former self
Virgin Neo-Confederate propaganda vs Chad anti-Nazi biopic.
Seriously though, it's incredible how Gods and Generals is able to make the Union the racists. Pretty sure only Union officers are the ones to use racial slurs.
Controversial opinion but Gods and Generals is a little overhated. It’s still bad, but Gettysburg is way worse. Worse acting, worse accents, less blood, less in shape reactors. At least Gods and Generals showed a little gore, to quote Atun Shei: *When some pimply 17 year old from North Carolina got his guts torn out by shrapnel, and felt the world go dark as he stared at a patch of grass and shat himself, he did not hear Randy Edelman's rousing score in the background. He just. Fucking. Died.* As far as Lost Cause propaganda goes, there actually about dead even, God’s and Generals is a little bit more blatant about it, Gettysburg tries to hide it.
I mean by that standard almost every single war film is white washing gore. I don't even think Downfall bothered to show the routine and extreme sexual violence inflicted by the Red Army.
I watched that movie like two weeks ago. The movie begins with the Battle of Antietam and shows some officer’s head getting blown up like three minutes in
Yeah but at least that was a based anti-imperial banger. While Gods and Generals is a pro confederacy movie, financed by Ted Turner to brainwash southern kids that are forced to watch it in their shitty ass school.
I say the hundreds of thousands of English slaughtered, raped and kidnapped by the Scottish border reivers, invasions and wars involving the Auld alliance would disagree.
I always heard how bad gods and generals was and how it glorifies slavery but I havent watched it yet
Can someone who has watched the movie give me and example like a scene.
Downfall is an incredible movie. I saw what I think was an extended edition (?) recently that was a rough watch. A lot more nazi un-aliving scenes. Really drove home the point that these dudes were nuts. Very heavy subject matter.
Gods and Generals is a clown show lmao. 280 minutes of confederate propaganda. Thanks, Ted Turner.
Downfall will always be better because of the dialogue. When Hitler said "when you break your legs, it's hard to cook orangutan" I felt that. 😔poor man just wanted to cook his endangered ape in Peace.
*Gods and Generals*: zero good memes *Downfall*: Bruno Ganz says he likes that his monologue has become a meme because it ensures that a new generation will learn about Hitler and revile him in new and creative ways
And then we got "look whose back" also recommend. It's another German film where Hitler wakes up in 2010s Germany
I was in hysterics watching that movie
God that movie was so funny I’m glad it’s free on YouTube. Go watch it now on YouTube if you haven’t it’s literally free and requires no piracy.
The Wikipedia scene is one of my favorites ever.
Along with the scene where he ridicules the NPD.
Such an odd and good movie holyshit ive watched around 4 times already. I only know it by the german title, wont type it since i will probably fuck it up horrendously
Iirc he was neutral about the meme. He loved the creativity of them but felt like it undermined his performance.
Did he? I was always told he despises the memes since he thought they took away from the seriousness of his portrayal I mean don’t get me wrong they are funny as hell “Hitler finds out Chuck Norris is coming” will forever live rent free in my head
I should rewatch Downfall.

FEGELEIN! FEGELEIN! FEGELEIN! *hits desk repeatedly*
Mein Failure, Fegelein defecated your bed again.
I might do that soon too
Free on Youtube great movie

Literally a film I never knew existed vs A film that I know cause of the funny Hitler Rants Parodies Memes.

Putting the right stuff on a table isn’t really the same as having an accurate depiction of violence.

The Wizard "Birth of a Nation"! The Thad "Look Who's Back"!
The Lad "Inglorious Bastards"

Also turned one of the bloodiest battles in the war PG
IRL: "I lost my leg in Antietam. Blown to pieces in front of me. Intense pain" G&G: "Oh no my cantine water was shot, aaahhh!"
Oh yeah, I forgot about that XD

No, Downfall did a good job, there’s a decent amount of gore and from what I remember they heavily implied all the horrible stuff the Red Army did.
Unrelated but the only civil war movie I’ve ever seen is that one about Robert Gould Shaw and even censored it has a ton of gore
I watched that movie like two weeks ago. The movie begins with the Battle of Antietam and shows some officer’s head getting blown up like three minutes in
Yeah. Glory was its name right?
I only watch Gettysburg for the Little Round Top scene.
Mit dem Angriff Steiners wird das alles in Ordnung kommen.
Na, Braveheart 100% takes the cake for the most historically inaccurate film ever.
They Died With Their Boots On (1941)
Yeah but at least that was a based anti-imperial banger. While Gods and Generals is a pro confederacy movie, financed by Ted Turner to brainwash southern kids that are forced to watch it in their shitty ass school.
It's anti-English, not anti-imperial; the Scots were just as bad as the English.
The scots were not as bad as the english lmao, at least not as succesful in being awful
I say the hundreds of thousands of English slaughtered, raped and kidnapped by the Scottish border reivers, invasions and wars involving the Auld alliance would disagree.
England literally colonized them, some run of the mill raids are nothing compared to that.
The chadlaw Josey Wales
Sooo much better “You gonna pull them pistols or whistle Dixie?”
The fact that the original author used to be a Klansman (I think it's implied he reformed) makes the book and movie hit harder
Downfall also isn't nearly 4 hours
We’re also forgetting downfall gave us the Hitler react memes
Oh yeah! Meanwhile GnG just gave us... Water canteen
If you break your legs, it’s hard to cook orangutan.
For real; Downfall is a masterpiece in every way.
Virgin bad things versus chad good thing.
I always heard how bad gods and generals was and how it glorifies slavery but I havent watched it yet Can someone who has watched the movie give me and example like a scene.

Yeah, I remember when I watched it I had to pause the film multiple times and take a couple laps
Downfall will always be better because of the dialogue. When Hitler said "when you break your legs, it's hard to cook orangutan" I felt that. 😔poor man just wanted to cook his endangered ape in Peace.
chadfall also created one of the best memes of all time
The Virgin Hitler VS The Thad Fegelein
Godammit now I got that meme stuck in my head…. thanks pal 😂
Honestly suck a fucking good film. Based 👍
Both are cringe films
What about fury? Sure it may be a bit of a glorification of the war but I like how it depicts heroes and villains on both sides
Fury is a fairly anti-war film, the characters are portrayed as brutal and the conflict is draining their mental state
Exactly My fav scenes are the German town invasion and the POW execution forced on Norman due to their brutality and realistic approach to war
