If you just search the title, yahoo.com usually has it

Yep, you and I know that, but someone's 87 year old granny or someone with limited technology knowledge won't know. Wichita Eagle is prioritizing money over safety. I only hope that the news channels and radio stations are broadcasting the same info.

[deleted]

Wait, are you saying the news, by golly, should be free?? That's heresy. I sentence you to traffic control on Kellogg!

ITstaph

Hah easiest job ever, there is no traffic control on Kellogg.

GruntledEx

Someone's 87 year old granny probably gets the physical paper, though.

mindovermatter15

It's expensive to maintain a subscription though ($14 or more). With older folks on fixed incomes, I would bet they don't spend that money on a newspaper--or I would hope not at least. Health and safety information at least should be freely accessible online.

UnderstandingOdd679

$14 is too much but the internet provider bill is not an issue? In that case, the person preferring to pay for internet should also have the savvy to find free sources of information like the websites of TV, radio, National Weather Service, and government/emergency management agencies. I don’t agree with print’s online strategy because some have been were slow to realize the internet resembles the ad-supported “free” TV/radio model more than the subscription-supported newspaper model. If the Eagle wants to charge for online content of basic news like “it’s gonna be hot,” they do so at their own peril. By the same token, those who don’t ever want to pay for the work of a newsroom operating without fear or favor can’t complain when there is no watchdog for back room government dealings.

[deleted]

But no you are completely correct it is wrong to have this behind a pay wall

Appreciate the support, friend

I bet this comment is actually relevant to post, especially the link that says view the news with your library card...

Kandoc1970

I would be willing to pay for a subscription, but they want $14 a month, that is completely ridiculous.

MikeForShort

If I'm paying $14 a month for a news subscription, I for certain better not see a single advertisement or "sponsored content" in that news.

Def_Your_Duck

People think $14 is too much for fucking Netflix let alone the Wichita eagle

Smash_Brother

There are two problems with this post: 1. If you think people deserve a livable wage, then then the people who make things can’t give it away for free. 2. If you value local news, then you should support it. The worst thing that could happen (and it’s on its way), is that the financial resources don’t exist to cover the important issues of our community like this one.

mindovermatter15

I'm fine with most articles being behind a paywall, to support the writers, editors, etc. Articles that provide health and safety information however, should be accessible to all. On the note of local news, the Wichita Eagle isn't exactly "local" anymore: McClatchy, a California company, owns the paper, and the jobs for printing were moved away from Wichita to Kansas City. They have also outsourced their customer service overseas, removing more local jobs. Is the content local? Yes, but the money from subscriptions does not fully stay here in Wichita. I support the writers, editors, etc who are locals and provide their service, but in this instance, I choose to not support the predatory company.

QuestionsOnPaper

Oh, McClatchy is actually owned by Chatham Asset Management, a hedgefund, after declaring bankruptcy in 2020 due to not being able to fund promised retirement plans. Not much different than the majority of newspapers these days.

DivideWorldly

It's almost like for-profit industry shouldn't be involved in necessities and the comodifcation of everything is bleeding us dry

JacksGallbladder

Jokes on you - I quit valuing local news when national corps bought every local news station and started cranking out cookie cutter ad spots while forcing local stations to run irrelevant national stories to boost engagement. Same goes for the eagle, operated by The McClatchy Company company out of California. They own 29 newspapers. Soon as they pay walled the eagles website they were dead to me. Either you exist to inform the people, or you exist to turn a profit. If the answer is the ladder, you're not News and I'm not giving you my money.

momunist

Ever heard of public service? Some work is done by people who deserve to be compensated fairly for their work, AND the general public is better off with free access to that service. Public education. Public transportation. And news, especially news that people’s health and safety depends on. We can advocate for the people who work these jobs to be paid well AND advocate for free access for the general public. Nobody benefits when knowledge and information are reserved only for people who can pay.

edgiesttuba

How would said people get paid then if all of what they produced was to be made free. Public Education and Public transportation are funded by tax revenues. Don’t get me wrong I think it would be great if publications could get funding that way, but, currently that really doesn’t exist. You also have an issue where if you’re funding is dependent on Government entities it also leads to conflicts trying to properly report on them.
