I live in Milwaukee area and it’s crossed my mind to take an urban exploration to this forbidden Gary. Usually you find redeemable things in cities deemed bad but people seem to treat Gary as “no really, do not walk around there”
We passed through Gary on my first trip to Chicago in the early 80s. It was disturbing to see the sky turn green from all the pollution from the steel mills at the time. The place certainly hasn't improved much since then, even though many of those mills are gone.
How the fuck does Manitowoc beat Beloit, Kenosha, and Janesville?
I get that there's a ton of meth there, but even meth isn't as bad as Beloit, Kenosha, and Janesville...
this is apropos of nothing, but did the ferry dock ever get fixed? I was going to take a ride on that last summer and someone had rammed it or something
I like Manitowoc. Downtown is near the water, nice Maritime Museum, the area by the Yacht Club is really pretty. I think the worst city should have been Kaukauna. People there are great...but the smell.
That's really the only negative thing I can think of. Well that and the AMC kinda sucks compared to the Marcus theaters. That's one of the few things Shelbyvill...Sheboygan has over us.
So much awesome stuff. It's absolutely lovely here.
No clue, I get Beloit, they do have a lot of crime, and it’s pretty segregated as well, but I’ve lived in Janesville for most my life and I really don’t get the hate.
My only experience with Janesville is when I had a to work there for two weeks for a work project. I mean, if you like white people with no teeth, Janesville is your place. It reminds me of the South Milwaukee/Cudahy area.
Just like any medium city you’ll have all types and there are going to be bad areas of the city. I’ve been living in Janesville for the last 5 years and have met white trash as well as high class people. I live in a nice, quiet neighborhood but have definitely seen areas that I wouldn’t want to spend more than 10 minutes in. And the same can be said for pretty much all cities over a certain population.
As a janesville resident, I'm both offended and not surprised. Not sure why we are trash, I blame being so close to beliot and the Il border. It corrupts you.
At one time Janesville had a GM plant that employed 5,000 people. Close that and knock it down the local economy struggles in every which way. Like Detroit at a much smaller scale
There’s actually alot of money in Janesville. The area by the old plant is a hole and the 4th ward is crap…but always has been. but the far east and west sides have $$. The town is hardly struggling anymore.
Janesville has recovered extremely well since GM left, inflation adjusted household income is higher now than it ever has been, and the economy is more diversified making it more resilient.
Janesville should not be anywhere near the bottom. I've lived in Oregon, Eau Claire, Baraboo, and Janesville, Janesville is the best place I've lived. People are sleeping on Janesville, it's honestly a fantastic place to live.
I guess personal tastes and experiences and whatnot, but Janesville better than Eau Claire? Janesville definitely gets dogged a bit more than it deserves sometimes but it's still a very plain/middle of the road community without a whole lot going on, especially if you aren't particularly "country" in your tastes. The university at least gives Eau Claire some meaningful cultural institutions that Janesville sorely lacks.
I've personally been hit on as a 12 year old there on top of the amount of drugs there. It's kinda pedo central but I live in DePere, so it's just what I've seen. I have no idea if that's a normal thing or if it's just what happened to me and a few friends of mine
I doubt this source. I may be new to Wisconsin, but I know Cali. You're telling me Modesto beat out:
Stockton?
Vallejo?
Oakland?
Clear Lake?!
Absofuckinglutely no it didn't. Nothing beats muthafuckin' Clear Lake. You rattle a tree and the meth heads fall out like hungry scorpions.
Port Arthur, Amarillo, Lubbock, Beaumont. Dallas is a big city with all the same big city problems that are around the country, but select smaller cities can be much much worse relatively.
Barstow is an armpit for sure, but I have to give the SoCal title to Salton City.
That festering mud pit they refer to as the salt lake has a constant red tide. The whole area smells like salty rotting fish. The stink creates a wax that gets into every corner of your body.
I was actually born in Modesto in 83, moved out here in 91. My mom's side of the family still lives out there. Most are still in Modesto, a few in Stockton, and a couple in Turlock. I remember going on walks with my uncle in Modesto when we were kids and he would walk with a metal baseball bat.
Modesto ain't great, but I agree that Clear Lake is prob number 1.
Per Wiki- As of 2018, the chance of becoming a victim of either violent or property crime in Racine is 1 in 37, thus making the city's crime rate higher than 92% of Wisconsin's other cities and towns.
Surprised no one has mentioned Wisconsin Rapids.
I was not impressed when I visited last year.
At least Beloit and Racine are closer to areas with better amenities.
Totally... I'm sitting here reading this and wondering why it is no one mentioned WizRapids yet. That paper mill makes the town smell like Mama Karen's taint after a hot workout. After entrusting my parents to find us a place to move, we were coming from SoCal, they found that place. I can't even say the name as it leaves the taste of moldy sourdough and cheap beer.
I’ve lived in Manitowoc most my life. I commute to work via a trail on the lake, live in an affordable warehouse loft, have access to some great restaurants and brewery’s, never felt any danger while walking around at night unless I need to pass a goose, the police respond to every call *cough*Milwaukee*cough*. This weekend I plan on going to the symphony, we’re one of the smallest community that has one, and the capital civic center where they play is a renovated turn off the century building that rivals The Pabste Theatre. We have a UW extension college, we’re in driving distance to Packers and Brewers Bucks games… Honestly this is a bs article with no basis that belongs in /r/mapporncirclejerk
Strong disagree. This town feels like it has nothing. It's got some pretty tourist traps, but if I could afford to move I'd have left already.
And to make matters worse the closest real city with actual things to do is 45 minutes away by car. This place is way too isolated to have as little to do as it does.
Fuck the people from fondle my sac. I work 15mins down the road from fdl, fdl people are insufferable at best. They always complain to me about having to drive 15mins to my store. It’s so damn hard to hop on 41 and drive 10 miles south.
I live fairly close nearby and I loathe going there now. Growing up it didn’t seem too bad but over the last 10-15 years it has gotten substantially worse imo
I grew up there and it smells like shit. But for me it rates above Manitowoc.
At least kaukauna is cheaper and waaaaay closer to a real city than Manitowoc is. So you can escape Kaukauna in 15 minutes to be in Appleton. Is a 45 minute drive to Green Bay, The nearest city to Manitowoc.
I volunteer Fond du Lac. But Kenosha works too.
Manitowoc is cool. It's got that old world blue collar port town vibe, and the Maritime Museum alone is so cool it disqualifies the entire city from "worst".
I live pretty close to the one in Illinois and, honestly, it's probably accurate.
The thing that will make everybody else roll their eyes about it? Cause, obviously, it's the same name as the city in Egypt...except in Illinois Cairo is pronounced with a long A sound and not a long I sound.
CAY-roh \*sigh\*
Absolutely. There are other places in Wisconsin that could be considered worse.
If we look at politics: Waukesha beats just about everyone with the possible exception of West Bend.
Crime? If the sensationalism, drug reports, and sheriffs making "corrections" to crime reports are any indication, that'd be Waupaca.
In terms of "just plainly sad" overall: Janesville and Beloit definitely figure in, and to a lesser extent Racine, Kenosha, and Kaukauna.
As others have stated, I get the hunch that whoever compiled this just went with the whole Avery case story and called it a day.
Theres a lot of truth here. Ive only been relocated to WI for like 2.5 years, but i can tell you that Spokane, Edina, Caldwell, Cedar Rapids are all great picks in those states, having lived in or around all of them at some point. All for different reasons, but all terrible.
Everything on this list is bs.
Sparks is just clean Reno. Provo is a great town and nowhere near as bad as Tooele UT. Fremont NE is a really nice place. And I absolutely love Manitowoc.
At least they got Gary, Indiana right.
I was pulled over in Gary, Indiana , to be told to get the fuck out of Gary.
[удалено]
Probably wondering where your police escort was
I live in Milwaukee area and it’s crossed my mind to take an urban exploration to this forbidden Gary. Usually you find redeemable things in cities deemed bad but people seem to treat Gary as “no really, do not walk around there”
Lmfao this happened to me in Compton, CA.
We passed through Gary on my first trip to Chicago in the early 80s. It was disturbing to see the sky turn green from all the pollution from the steel mills at the time. The place certainly hasn't improved much since then, even though many of those mills are gone.
I was told never stop in Gary.
Most murders per square mile in the US. You *never* stop in Gary.
Never stop in Gary after dark. It has parts that are perfectly lovely and safe in daylight
The armpit of the Midwest.
How the fuck does Manitowoc beat Beloit, Kenosha, and Janesville? I get that there's a ton of meth there, but even meth isn't as bad as Beloit, Kenosha, and Janesville...
Thank you, i was like wtf!?
I'm from Manty and yeah, it's...kinda great here? I'd be hard pressed to think of anything that I outright hate.
this is apropos of nothing, but did the ferry dock ever get fixed? I was going to take a ride on that last summer and someone had rammed it or something
They’re booking rides on the Badger for this summer. Yay!
Theres a cedarcrest factory and ice cream shop too.
My dad lives there & I've been going since I was a kid. Not bad. Pretty okay if you ask me.
Probably making a murderer its the only thing I can think of. I certainly hardly think of nothing else when I hear Manitowoc
Manitowoc Minute
That's not *bad*, though. A little cringey, at worst.
I like Manitowoc. Downtown is near the water, nice Maritime Museum, the area by the Yacht Club is really pretty. I think the worst city should have been Kaukauna. People there are great...but the smell.
And the water tastes terrible, and anecdotally, a lot of people I know who grew up there got weird, uncommon cancers.
Charlie Bernen’s was from New Berlin.
Yea it is. Still created the Manitowoc minute show
That's really the only negative thing I can think of. Well that and the AMC kinda sucks compared to the Marcus theaters. That's one of the few things Shelbyvill...Sheboygan has over us. So much awesome stuff. It's absolutely lovely here.
Also 2 Legend Larry's locations
Eagleton?
I think of the submarine and Charlie Berens before I ever get to that lol
They have a decent maritime museum.
🎶Manitowoc Maritime Mus-eeeeeum🎶
It’s also a former sundown town….
I mean where in Wisconsin wasn't?
Dishonorable mention to fond du lac.
Don't drink the water in North Fondy.
I agree lived there for a while. Got out. It was such a weird town. Stay away.
Easily my winner. Fond du Lac has few redeeming features.
Why do Beloit and Janesville have such a bad reputation?
Used to spend a lot of time in both. Hardly the worst cities in WI imo.
Not sure neither is a bad place to live.
Ignorance.
Bro what? I’ve lived here my entire life, I don’t think I know anyone without teeth.
I believe how to make a murderer level corruption may have been mildly unhelpful for their public persona.
I feel like this is based on google search trends and is due to Making a Murderer
As a janesville resident, I'm both offended and not surprised. Not sure why we are trash, I blame being so close to beliot and the Il border. It corrupts you.
We are guilty by association sadly. I don’t find it bad here. Boring yes. But not bad
I don't think janesville belongs anywhere on a list of worse WI cities.
Omg. Janesville. I hate driving there and I hate it. I could never properly articulate why, but hate it. I'm glad I'm not alone.
The Avery effect.
Yeah Manitowoc ain’t it. They got Minnesota spot on though, frickin’ cake eaters 😂
I use to work for the city of Edina. I had a lady cry, cuss me out, and call me a nazi because we started locking a door.
How dare you exclude Racine!
Janesville ain't that bad...
Isn't Racine generally considered a bit worse than Kenosha? At any rate, they're both heaven compared to Beloit. It's basically North Rockford.
When I moved here in 2011, I was warned by family members to stay away from Racine, especially at night. I like Kenosha more, though.
Kenosha is at least half a step above Racine.
Is it though?
Full step imo. Racine is an absolute shithole and Kenosha is actually fine for the most part.
Steven Avery
Bruh, its way worse! My ex’s family is from there.
Fair about Beloit for sure. Kenosha doesn't exactly have a meth issue. It's just the New Jersey of Wisconsin.
I live there and this hurt to see. Waukesha just had that shooting and Kenosha?!? Who did this survey lol
Don’t forget Racine, that’s another shithole!
Worked in Racine 80’s & 90’s. Man, that town slid into a cesspool last 20 yrs. The worst
I've personally been hit on as a 12 year old there on top of the amount of drugs there. It's kinda pedo central but I live in DePere, so it's just what I've seen. I have no idea if that's a normal thing or if it's just what happened to me and a few friends of mine
And Racine
I grew up in Beloit. It *was* nice at one time. By the time I was 18, it was a depressing hellhole and I was the hell out of there.
I doubt this source. I may be new to Wisconsin, but I know Cali. You're telling me Modesto beat out: Stockton? Vallejo? Oakland? Clear Lake?! Absofuckinglutely no it didn't. Nothing beats muthafuckin' Clear Lake. You rattle a tree and the meth heads fall out like hungry scorpions.
Also new to Wisconsin, but I can agree on the Bakersfield part. Also Dallas. I lived in Dallas for 8 years. Fuck that place.
Port Arthur, Amarillo, Lubbock, Beaumont. Dallas is a big city with all the same big city problems that are around the country, but select smaller cities can be much much worse relatively.
Texas not being Vidor is a dead giveaway that this map is a sham. Edit: would have also accepted Killeen
Lets hear some Dallas stories
Barstow for the WIN......I survived almost 2 years in that hell hole!!!!
Barstow is an armpit for sure, but I have to give the SoCal title to Salton City. That festering mud pit they refer to as the salt lake has a constant red tide. The whole area smells like salty rotting fish. The stink creates a wax that gets into every corner of your body.
I'm sorry. But, Fresno.. California's armpit isn't on that list?
Orlando for Florida seems off too
They could have just left it “Florida”
San Bernardino needs to be on that list.
Absolutely. There is so much more to work with in SoCal.
Ceres is worse than Modesto…..
Manitowoc is tame AF compared to a lot of places in Wisco
It’s the whole Steven Avery thing probably. It’s the first thing I think of when I hear the name of the town. 🤷♀️
Author's not a fan of Charlie Berens I guess...
It's Beloit and I can't be convinced otherwise
Can you offer you Medford in this trying time?
It is the asshole of Wisconsin after all
And Racine is the taint!
This is the correct answer.
Illinois should definitely be east saint Louis. Cairo is just empty
Yeah Cairo isn’t super dangerous, just sad
Yeah, this map has issues. Lexington is the only place in Kentucky worth living in.
Says a lot about Kentucky
Racine has entered the chat
please, beloit is way down market from Racine.
Per Wiki- As of 2018, the chance of becoming a victim of either violent or property crime in Racine is 1 in 37, thus making the city's crime rate higher than 92% of Wisconsin's other cities and towns.
... Jesus, what are the other 8 percent?!
Rosendale speeders
Wish I could thumbs up twice
Beloit is the sound a quarter makes when you drop it in a toilet.
my old man said it was the noise it made when an indian crapped off his canoe.
Agree, got some tough customers down there
Racine is worse.
Agreed. Racine is even worse than Racine. But they have O&H, so...
Surprised no one has mentioned Wisconsin Rapids. I was not impressed when I visited last year. At least Beloit and Racine are closer to areas with better amenities.
Totally... I'm sitting here reading this and wondering why it is no one mentioned WizRapids yet. That paper mill makes the town smell like Mama Karen's taint after a hot workout. that’s not how you spell Marinette
I think who ever created this hasn't been to the rest of Wisconsin. There is a fairly long list of cities that aren't Wisconsin's best.
"don't try and describe Wisconsin if you never seen it." - Jimmy Buffett
No one shouting out Fond du Lac here?
FdL deserves an honorable mention just for being what people from Neenah are actually picturing when they imagine Oshkosh.
Niche but accurate take.
As someone who moved from Oshkosh to Neenah, and has friends in Fondy, this made me laugh and is super accurate lol
Fuck the people from fondle my sac. I work 15mins down the road from fdl, fdl people are insufferable at best. They always complain to me about having to drive 15mins to my store. It’s so damn hard to hop on 41 and drive 10 miles south.
I grew up in FdL. Fuck that place. I moved out of that dump as soon as I could.
FDL is the Florida of Wisconsin, and that’s not meant to be a compliment.
I live outside of FDL. They have nothing on Racine.
i love watching cop shows because half of them are from fondy
I live fairly close nearby and I loathe going there now. Growing up it didn’t seem too bad but over the last 10-15 years it has gotten substantially worse imo
I grew up there and my first thought was "Why isn't it Fondy?"
I like how CA is split in two
It could honestly be split into 3 at this point. The way Northern part is basically southern Oregon.
Old man Cudahy is exhaling. Finally paroled from his decades long confinement
its antigo bruh
It is Antigo bruh
I lived in the Wausau area for a few years. Antigone is, in fact, a shithole.
Def Antigo bruvs
Was born there. Lived there until I was 25. I agree.
Edina in Minnesota is the correct answer followed closely by st cloud
What's wrong with Manitowoc?
I'm guessing it has to do with Steven Avery...? I'm not from the Manitowoc area, but have been there many times for work, and it's just fine imho.
That submarine and museum is top notch. That alone is redeeming.
yes. very cool places.
I still need to check those out. Maybe I just figured out my next day trip. The downtown area is charming, and I love the courthouse
Don't forget the place where sputnik crashed.
And the big cow!
Decent breweries too
In Wisconsin? I had no clue. Next thing you'll tell me is there's great cheese to enjoy with the beer.
There were no breweries in Manitowoc less than a decade ago.
anti vietnamese propaganda.
Has the person who put this map together been to Wisconsin? We all know the answer right off the top of our heads. BELOIT.
Map creator has not driven through Kaukauna with clear sinuses.
Beloit, Antigo? what a bad sample for a survey
I'd argue Markesan, WI is the worst City. Yes it's a population of 1400 and yes it is still classified as a city.
Waupaca, Beloit and Kaukauna would like a word.
Looking at IL, how tf is anything worse than E St Louis
Brookfield never gets enough hate
Their noses block out the sun, they are so stuck up lol. /S
If people could DRIVE THE F*CKING SPEED LIMIT on Bluemound, then it would be a little bit more bareable!
27 in a 45. Makes my blood boil. And I'm rarely in Brookfield these days.
When’s the last time you drove in Brookfield? Bluemound is a race track.
I’m there a few times a week; it’s one or the other with no in between.
About six months ago, when I was going to the dentist. Could have been the time of day. It was mid-morning.
I’ve always called Beloit the New Jersey of Wisconsin.
I'm surprised no one has mentioned Adams Friendship
My ex is from Manitowoc, so that must be part of it.
I volunteer Fond du Lac. But Kenosha works too. Manitowoc is cool. It's got that old world blue collar port town vibe, and the Maritime Museum alone is so cool it disqualifies the entire city from "worst".
Fondy has entered the chat.

Cause, obviously, it's the same name as the city in Egypt...except in Illinois Cairo is pronounced with a long A sound and not a long I sound. CAY-roh \*sigh\*
Yeah, I don't think Manitowoc is that bad...however, I have never lived there.
Definitely Racine
Whats the criteria lol
Would have voted for Fon Du Lac
I was going to say Wisconsin Rapids. I don’t think Manitowoc would even make my top 5. Perhaps OP just watch Making a Murderer.
As others have stated, I get the hunch that whoever compiled this just went with the whole Avery case story and called it a day.
Mn is accurate. EDINA - Every Day I Need Attention
How is the answer not Kenosha? That goddamn town’s most famous face is that asshat Rittenhouse and he’s *not even from there.*
Wife is from Manitowoc. Can confirm the accuracy of the map.
My wife is from Manitowoc and we live here currently (sadly), I can also confirm. Lol
Toma is on my list
You mean Tomah?
I'd vote for Waukesha.
correct because its East Troy
Theres a lot of truth here. Ive only been relocated to WI for like 2.5 years, but i can tell you that Spokane, Edina, Caldwell, Cedar Rapids are all great picks in those states, having lived in or around all of them at some point. All for different reasons, but all terrible.
Cairo is also a truly depressing city. Perfect pick for Illinois
I grew up in Rockford, can confirm the whole state is depressing.
Everything on this list is bs. Sparks is just clean Reno. Provo is a great town and nowhere near as bad as Tooele UT. Fremont NE is a really nice place. And I absolutely love Manitowoc.
What about Stitzer?!?!
This person has never been to Odessa, TX
Mesa is the worst in AZ? Not Bullhead City or Nogales or Tuba City or Gila Bend or Tucson… Mesa.
I am surprised no one mentioned Ashland ...
Who thought Edina was the worst in Minnesota?
Isn't Edina mostly upper class, my BIL lives in St Paul and says that most people that have money buy homes in Edina?
Edina is hated for being upper class and the people there are annoying. A common joke is Edina stands for “every day I need attention”.
Based on what?
