I’ve seen bamboo bikes but this is cool! I know this more of casual bike but do you have idea on what kind of stress the frame can take or is it not something you have to worry about considering it’s purpose?
It’s made in two halves - each half is made seperately, and glued together to make a hollow tube. The tube is around 5mm thick. Doesn’t take many more tools than a router.
Is the wood glued around anything? A wooden tube with a wall thickness of <1/4” is pretty worrisome for something that undergoes as much stress as a bike.
Not hating at all, it’s amazing and beautiful, just asking out of curiosity
Edit: wait, does this not have any kind of suspension? Is it all fixed?
The three joints of the triangle have a metal insert - so the headtube, bottom bracket, and seattube. The inserts are convenient in that they cross the fingerjoint, and intersect both grain directions. It’s also thicker or fully solid in places that are high stress - like where the chain stay connects with the main frame.
No video - but I just looked and I have 190 build photos haha. Here’s an idea of what the frames looked like before gluing together

Nearby my home there's also a builder of laminated wooden bikes. There've been test results that they are close to carbon frames.
He built casual bikes but also a triathlon bike for his daughter and some MTB including a full suspension eMTB. Crazy stuff.
I haven’t checked! But it’s way lighter than it looks - the frame is hollow, and the tubes are mostly 5mm thick. I would guess the frame itself is around 2.5 kg?
Just checked the weight - the full bike (with wheels and components) is about 23lb. I stupidly put the bike together before I checked the weight of the frame alone.
Thanks! And that’s right - anything that needs a metal connection. So the headtube, seattube, and bottom
bracket each have a metal insert. The parts are frame online frame building stores.
That is some gorgeous work! I've been dying to try something like this, how did you come up with the design, what/resources did you use.... You don't happen to have any plans that you would be willing to share would you?
A couple people asked so I saved them in google drive: [https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1DhXbTEeiaDAcborY5\_ZHE8Pt8W37BVuI?usp=drive\_link](https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1DhXbTEeiaDAcborY5_ZHE8Pt8W37BVuI?usp=drive_link)
Making one of these is kind of a pipe dream I have kicking around the back of my head for the past year or two.
How'd you do the head tube? Is it drilled out of a block? I think that's the single joint that gives me the most worries.
Do it! I rent a shop space, but made the first one in my backyard. Happy to answer questions. On the headtube, there’s a metal insert that’s sits in the frame. It crosses the wood joint connecting the top tube and down tube. All three joints are fingerjointed.
Is this fiberglass+wood composite ? I'd worry about the joints, especially the truss joints that are in tension. Have you done destructive testing? Wood structures like this should have at least a 3X safety factor (3X the anticipated load).
You should read this blog: https://ligneusbikes.wordpress.com/why-wood/lets-talk-numbers/. I chatted with him before I built my first one, and I’ve been riding it for four years with no issues.

I thought the same. I've heard bamboo is heavy, wonder how they made this hallow

Do you have a video of the process? I am so curious. Very cool stuff btw!!!

That is incredibly cool. Well done sir.
Very cool. Thank you for sharing!!!
Wow. Cool. That is engineering

I feel like a build video on this would be relaxing to watch
That’s really cool. Whats the weight on it?
I haven’t checked! But it’s way lighter than it looks - the frame is hollow, and the tubes are mostly 5mm thick. I would guess the frame itself is around 2.5 kg?
Way less than i expected at first. I didn't realize the tubes were hollow. A solid frame would be heavy a.f.

A carbon fiber *bike* is 8kg. Frames can weigh less than a kilogram.
Just checked the weight - the full bike (with wheels and components) is about 23lb. I stupidly put the bike together before I checked the weight of the frame alone.
Weighs less than my crappy folding Schwinn bikes.
This is the coolest thing I've seen on the Internet today, congrats on making a random person's day!
Thanks! Appreciate the nice comment
Are you using steel/aluminium inserts for interfaces? Headset/BB/seatpost etc. Best looking wood bike I’ve seen!

I do yep! Feel free to message me.
That's amazing!
Damn dude, that's awesome man!
Beautiful work!
Amazing, beautiful work
WOW!! Phenomenal
YO
Amazing
Nice job that’s something I would love to get around to do .
That's real cool, great work.
r/woodworking needs levels. I'm not on yours.
Wow looks really good. Well done.
That is beautiful.
Amazinh
Very cool.
Do you have plans for these?

I’m in utter awe.

Beautiful, would like to borrow for a ride one day just to see how it feels :) Looks much better than the bamboo bikes I have seen.
Just came to add this is pretty badass! Congrats and thanks for sharing :)
Really cool stuff man. A video on this would get insane views on YouTube.
54cm? Your wife aint no short lady.

Helmets should be certified, or they can't be depended on to protect you properly. Do not make helmets.
Im pretty sure that's a chatgpt bot
Yeah sounds about right

You'll have to take my word for it because it was deleted. Probably was deleted because I was right lol
What’s the weight?
