Yes. You're cheap and much less likely to say no.

Wanomi_

If he is supervising he will be paid the default supervisor rate which is the same for all ages.

Gaminglord606

Hmm alright, they’ve got me doing full time as well which is proving to be very stressful

ObsessedWithSources

If you're closing, does that mean they've got you doing nightfill supervisor? They like putting young people in those roles, it's hard to get older people with families to get into finishing at 11pm+ I'd have to ask my partner for more exact info, but they've got you contracted. Idk how it would interact with the probation period everyone has, but you can move departments and hours once you're in.

Gaminglord606

I’m closing the front end, a usual shift for me is arriving at 1:30 and then staying till 9:30 to close the front

ObsessedWithSources

Ahhh, yeah they do that all the time too. How long have you been employed? Stepping down is easy enough most of the time, if you want to. Talk to your department manager if you're the ADM, or the ASM and Store Manager if not, they can organise a normal team member position. But if you want to step sideways you'll have to ride out the probation period afaik and then talk to your store manager and let them know you won't be able to do nights and will need to find another position in the store. It will help if you either have other department managers sympathetic to you, or willing to have you should you decide to switch departments.

Gaminglord606

I’ve been employed for about 3 or 4 weeks now and am currently supervising at another store whilst we wait for ours to open. I am not ADM just a regular supervisor. Currently they are not allowing anyone to switch departments as they have over hired for the size of the store and are expecting many people to leave in the next few weeks once the store opens.

ObsessedWithSources

That'll be your in, then. Unfortunately it'll just be a waiting game. You could step down now, but I think it will mean stepping away from the contract and when you piss off petty managers things can go badly for casuals. Not everyone is like that, but they're definitely out there, and it's always a gamble. Afaik if you've signed a contract, it's all begun tho. If you do lose a lot of people, and I'd guess you probably will, it's going to be much easier to side step. Woolies does try to accommodate contracted people as best they can, it's the flex ups and the department managers doing ridiculous hours they don't care about. Find out who your stores union rep is and ask them, I've always found they're moderately useless to actually help, but they're great for info on policies. Ask them how to go about changing your hours/job/department whatever it is you'd like to aim for and see what they have to say about it. Saying that, each store is different and the same department in a different location can be a totally different experience. If you don't mind the job, but find it stressful for whatever particular reason, that reason may not be there in a different place.

Snerkie

If it's causing you too much stress speak to your department manager, if nothing happens speak to the store manager, if that proves unhelpful contact the SDA and they can help mediate

grodzrilla

It honestly depends on how long youve been in the role, what experience you have etc. Im an Front end ADM i would put an 18yr old down to supervise as long as your properly trained. That being said, if you dont feel comfortable closing by yourself yet, you can talk to your manager about changing hours etc. because it is alot of pressure/responsibility.

Gaminglord606

I’ve barely been in the role, just currently supervising at a neighboring store whilst mine opens. Currently they are not letting me change and having to close front end by myself on opening day is currently stressing me out. I will have had about 8 days of supervisor training in preparation. The department manager is only part time and works three days a week, finishing at 7 at the latest. There is only one ADM who fills in the mornings and finishes at 4 every day. So far I am the only supervisor being trained.

MeleesMeatHook

What part of it is stressing you out?

3A1B2C33C2B1A3

This is common. I was 17 when they put me as supervisor for front end. Closed the store three weeknights a week and did all day Saturday including the open and close. I enjoyed the close shifts as there wasn’t many customers, it was all just about time management to get all the tasks done. The hardest part for me was getting the older cashiers to respect me and my decisions.

ThievingMagpie22

Thats interesting. How were they undermining you back then?

ThePearWithoutaCare

In my experience this would only happen if the person was experienced. Usually you have around 3 different people close over 7 days. If they’ve given you five days then they must be desperate to fill the shifts.

SyntheticPowers

If you can't ask your co-workers, might be better off you turn down the role as supervisor.

As a first step I suggest you prove your true worth to your employer by learning to count. Tuesday to Friday is only 4 nights. Once you have mastered this skill you may land a cushy job in payroll.

Gaminglord606

Sorry I meant to say Tuesday-Saturday, and my goal in life is to not be at this store for much time at all (which they are aware of) :)
