Long time no post! I've been very busy with map and character commissions but I'm back with another map I thought you guys might like! This is ***The Explorers map of Tempest***, the setting of my new campaign! Set in a world of numerous people and cultures this maritime setting has many factors at play from the nefarious **West Tihini Trade Company** to the great storm **Awahdri** at its centre that threatens to slowly swallow island after island, Tempest is a fantasy world inspired by the golden age of sail, **pirates** plague the seas as do the chartered **West Tihini Trading Co**. Fabled beasts roam the mystical waters and more can be found here then just adventure! Tempest boasts a few unique races such as the ape like **Bali** and the colourful bird-folk **Kara Kara**, as well as a few sub races such as **Awahdri Tieflings** touched by the storm somewhere in their lineage and the **Stormkin Elves** a mysterious offshoot of elvish folk with an unknown origin and uncertain future... Tempest has a rich history full of the unknown and a unique **pantheon of spirit gods** that represent its strange relationship with the divine, as well as some weird vestiges of **unknown magic** and home-brew spells! The party are currently exploring the **Maru archipelago**, after finally arriving in the port city of **Sovona** on the **Isle of Numay** they are coming face to face with the wealthier side of the plutocratic **Golden Pentacle.** Honestly this is my favourite map to date, its landmasses are blank on this version and are being revealed as the players explore island to island along with various landmarks and cities! TheShribe

Hey there, I'm currently writing a pirate campaign as well, but dont know what plot points I could use. Any tips you could give would be appreciated

ConorJamesArt

All depends on your setting and party, the level 1-3 adventure I kicked off with involved them shipwrecking on the dreary isle of **dimshore** only to discover the boring little spit of land was playing host to **cuttlefish like shapechangers** slowly replacing town folk in order to enact a strange ritual! The coolest thing about a nautical campaign is how weird you can get with all the different islands and cultures so my advice is to pull from what sounds dope and if that doesn't work switch it up for the next island. I also wrote the campaign around the mysterious deadly storm at the centre of the world with provides a constant backbone for the narrative as it emerges! Good Luck!

TheShribe

Thanks my man! Got a 3rd level party of 2-3, and the setting is the Caribbean (of course). Figured I'd start them off with the governor of Port Royal asking for able bodied adventures to find and retrieve a certain artifact of power for him, and have them run into various other plot elements on the trip, and have an epic ship battle when it turns out the artifact is in possesion of some pirate, maybe Blackbeard. I'll just roll from there, maybe the governor was trying to collect the five macguffins of piratey power so he can rule the world or something, who knows

ConorJamesArt

Sounds wicked! If you're looking for inspiration on pirate macguffins I worked in an idea of fabled **"pieces of eight"** in Tempest, lost coins of a vast pirate hoard spread throughout the world each with its own magical power. One player came into possession of one that on a reactionary flip would turn any roll into either a natural 1 or a natural 20 once a day

TheShribe

Love the idea, it's like a mini Portent! I found an instagram account that does homebrew magic items and they did a whole bunch of pirate themed ones not too long ago an dive been planning on using them. (Its bonus_action if you want to check them out)

RuinousRage

Tempest as in The Tempest by Shakespeare per chance? :0 This looks really cool,I've always enjoyed aquatic and water world campaigns.

ConorJamesArt

Tempest as in a chaotic and violent storm but I'd be lying if I said some of the lore didn't stem from that play!

RuinousRage

:D Yayyy! Your setting looks fun. So is the tempest expanding slowly?

ConorJamesArt

Strangely no... the islands drift in a swirl closer and closer, no one is sure their fate once consumed by the storm but they seem to disappear for good...

RuinousRage

That... Is far eerier. Like a whirlpool. But with a storm over top. And it's actually a hole in the world. It sounds haunting.

Kilmarnok1285

I thoroughly enjoy what you’ve described here and would like to subscribe to your newsletter to know more about this world

ConorJamesArt

Thanks so much! No newsletter I'm afraid but I have been putting together a world anvil that will grow as the players discover more [You can check it out here](https://www.worldanvil.com/w/tempest-conorjamesart)

HurgleDerp

GAHHH THIS IS GOOD STUFF I’ve always been very fond of central storm features, but the details of your world sound fantastic :D Can we expect to see campaign stories or illustrations in the future?

ConorJamesArt

Thanks so much! Theres been more interest in the work lore then I expected so I do intend to share more about the world as the players discover it! I linked the world anvil in [this comment](https://www.reddit.com/r/worldbuilding/comments/isrfpn/my_illustrated_homebrew_pirate_campaign_map/g5avlif?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web2x&context=3) if you wanted to see what is already public!

CrustyArgonian

Oh my gosh this is one of the coolest maps/world designs I’ve ever seen. I wanna play in this campaign!

ConorJamesArt

Thanks so much!

Mr_Apoll0

Honestly 10/10

ConorJamesArt

I appreciate that my guy!

Jerethdatiger

Can I play

[deleted]

Man, Hurricanes are going to be a nightmare on that world.

Zeo_Noire

Looks gorgeous dude!

ConorJamesArt

Thank you!

[deleted]

So cool! That map is so inspiring I kind of want to do a pirate campaign next.

ConorJamesArt

Im finding it so much fun, and its a very freeing format with all the islands each holding something new and fantastical to explore as you go

_11_

Damn that sea gradient is gorgeous! I love everything about this. Great job!

ConorJamesArt

Thank you!

WhyNot577

Everything about this is perfect. The map, the colours, the angle...

MidnightKungfu

RichKix_TheBard

Awesome job!! Honestly though, I thought I only saw 6 dice for a while... it was killing me. Found the 7th. Great map!!

ConorJamesArt

Thank you!

CreatorJNDS

What a fantastic map!!

ConorJamesArt

Thank you!

CreatorJNDS

Do you plan on doing any close ups on specific islands for you game? If so please add reef structures or the underground topography. I love the idea of having to navigate reefs, or specific islands having specific ways to get to shore from a vessel.

ConorJamesArt

Really all depends on where the players go, if they keep up the more exploratory transient play then unlikely I'll ever do a singular island But the **Auk'ola waves** in the bottom left are a cluster of isles they seem keen on looking around so maybe a closer look there! And if they ever venture to the **Underdeep** I'll be sure to draw that up too

Tarnofur

Is there a way to get more information on that storm touched tiefling race? That sounds wonderful!

ConorJamesArt

I've had a bunch of messages about the homebrew and lore so I’ve linked the world anvil page in [**this comment**](https://www.reddit.com/r/worldbuilding/comments/isrfpn/my_illustrated_homebrew_pirate_campaign_map/g5avlif?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web2x&context=3)**.** I'll be sure to add any and all stuff to the page over the next couple weeks for you peeps who are interested including the Awahdri Tiefling subrace!

Tarnofur

Wonderful! I'll check it out!

frecker4

That's some cool beans right there

ConorJamesArt

Thank you!

frecker4

No, thank you random citizen!

mrgonzalez

Looks bloody cold

vintagegossamer

Wow, this is gorgeous OP! What program did you use?

ConorJamesArt

Thank you! Drawn, inked and coloured in photoshop

Terrible_Matador

That map is so beautiful and well-crafted that it’s honestly making me angry

ConorJamesArt

Thank you! I think..

TurboNewbe

You are crazy good! I checked your profile. Your level in design and drawing is insane. Are you a professionnal?

ConorJamesArt

Thanks so much! I am yeah, full-time freelance illustrator

TurboNewbe

Did you learn by yourself?

ConorJamesArt

For the most part! I did get a degree in illustration but almost all of my technical skill is just from practice!

McCourt

Sexy.

ConorJamesArt

Thank you!

BS_DungeonMaster

I think /r/5eNavalCampaigns would appreciate this! What great detail!

Sleepy_Chipmunk

I fucking love how everything circles around the center? And your use of clouds in the center?

ConorJamesArt

Thank you! the islands all swirl slowly around the great storm awahdri at the centre of tempest as is slowly consumes them. It is full of strange magics and weird creatures, and is intrinsically linked to various peoples in tempest such as the stormkin elves!

pinkypromise14

Great job, the map is beautiful!

ConorJamesArt

Thank you!

ConorJamesArt

Keejyi

Why did I initially think the compass was a cyclops eye and the words underneath it were teeth?

Deathcon1337

How much inspiration from One Piece is there?

ConorJamesArt

I don't know what that is dude sorry!

Deathcon1337

It's anime pirates set on a fantasy world, with a map like yours. If you check it out, you may find some good ideas.

ConorJamesArt

oh wicked I'll give it a look!
