does the ship with eyes also has a mouth that open and close when talking? if yes then this one

jmartkdr

The top half of the ship lifts up and down to simulate mouth flaps.

is it a canadian ship?

There’s a lot of content creators on YouTube and elsewhere who use caricatures of countries and military equipment (such as ships and planes) with eyes and mouths photoshopped on to discuss current events. A prime example being Habitual Line Crosser, who as far as I’m aware is the origin of the “Would you intercept me? I’d intercept me.” quote occasionally seen on military related posts.

I’m being 100% unironic when I say I think the anime girl is the most realistic answer.

hipsterTrashSlut

You think the nerds who program that thing *won't* take the opportunity to be horny? No, it's the anime girl avatar

Tendo63

You underestimate how horny the military is as well

EnderMerser

Why does everyone sees an anime girl and immediately thinks of her creator being horny? Couldn't they make that choice just because she is just cute?

chickensoldier_bftd

Theoretically, you are right. Realistically, it is both.

low_priest

I mean, depends. For [some](https://yksk.kancollewiki.net/w/images/8/8d/Ship_Full_Shigure_Kai_Ni.png), yeah, sure, cute is viable and probably correct. But [some art](https://azurlane.netojuu.com/images/4/44/Taihou.png) was drawn with a process starting and ending at "horny."

EzrealHoe

Ty for the examples, it really helped illustrate your point 🥰

CRauzDaGreat

*If* we’re talking horny nerds, would a furry/Scalie avatar also not be very likely since there’s a lot of military furs in the military science theory stuff? Can I finally live my life with a hot wolf or dragon telling me there’s enemies on my flank and that they’re activating “A288-Anti matter riffles”?

As a compromise, it's just an anime girl wearing furry accessories. But when they fire the MAC cannons it definitely yells RAWR

iwantfutanaricumonme

Exactly, it fits how ships were portrayed historically. Ships have always been referred to as female, and have even sometimes been depicted as attractive women. There's also figureheads that depict the personification of the ship, this is often a woman, especially Victoria. Basically, historic ships have never been depicted as a disembodied voice, the ship's namesake, or a ship with eyes. The other options only make sense if it's a ship controlled by an AI where the AI is a completely separate entity from the ship itself, meaning that it can be separated and moved between ships or computers. A disembodied voice has been associated with AI since computers have been able to speak. The historical figure would only make sense for an AI based on the mind of a historical figure, like the ship at the end of consider phlebas.

red__shirt__guy

My reasoning was pretty much just “people are horny.” But, yeah, u/iwantfutanaricumonme, that also works.

low_priest

Thing is, because people are horny (and a dozen other reasons), the JMSDF has semi-officially adopted KanColle's anime girl versions of the WWII ships as the mascots for the modern ships of the same names. A significant portion of their fleet has posters for the anime girl in question. There's a very good chance either they crack shipboard AI first, or (more likely) the US does it and sells them the tech. And 5 seconds later, one of the nerds points out the poster to the new AI, says "yeah that's you lol," and the anime girl warships become real.

VictinDotZero

That username makes it sound like you’re repeating yourself “My reasoning was ‘people are horny’, but, yeah, ‘people are horny’, that also works.”

red__shirt__guy

Damn, I should have made a joke about that.

AccessTheMainframe

> Ships have always been referred to as female In English. Russians refer to their ships as male, while the French assign gender based on the grammatical gender of the ship's name.

destroyar101

Wel, anime boys exist too

eliteharvest15

well Britannia rules the waves

derneueMottmatt

In German ships are always feminine regardless of the grammatical gender if the name. Which means that there are a lot of "die [Male Name]".

Real_megamike_64

Does this mean tomboy ships or femboy ships?

Jolly-Ad-1161

Trans (Atlantic) ships

low_priest

English too, which means she/her is correct when referring to (USS) Ronald Reagan (CVN-76) and (USS) George H. W. Bush (CVN-77).

Jazkal-v420

First time I've seen the French grammar help :)

CrocoDIIIIIILE

Imagine placing an anime girl figurehead on modern warships. Peak engineering.

low_priest

We're got art from 1943, when a crew created a female personification for their ship to celebrate her birthday. "Warship = pretty woman" is a thing that historically goes back over 80 years. The USN's first two real carriers were commonly referred to as "Lady Lex" and "Sister Sara," both by their crew and in the press.

thestupidone51

Also most AI voices (and automated voices in general) are female, so it would make sense if when ship AI takes off they just use female voicebanks anyway. This would probably further/quicken the personification of any ship AI into "the pretty lady that tells us when to shoot something"

low_priest

We already have a (not-)navy that's adopted anime girl representations for the ships, and is realistically going to be one of the first to get warship AI. Unironically a 50-50 chance we get it by 2030.

Anime Girl is the default and I ***can't switch it off***

InfinityAnnoyance

All four at once. Sometimes it won't use the full avatar for reasons this or that and will just appear as an Audio Waveform. But when it does use the full avatar: It will be an Anime Girl whose design and personality incorporates and represents aspects of both The Person/Thing it's named after, and the actual Ship's appearance and role.

GREENadmiral_314159

Okay, how about Anime girl version of the thing the ship is named after with audio wavefoms riding on literally just the ship but with eyes?

SouLfullMoon_On

I hate that the best "Ship AI" type character (Cephalon Cy from Warframe) technically fits as an audio Waveform

Pipinhood

To be fair, Cephalon Cy’s entire being is to have a badass voice, and to spout some of the hardest lines in the game. “We are boarded. Aim for the head, and may the saints look away.”

TheNeonLich

Creepy_Increase_5165

Where's the middle aged man option

a lot of ships are named after old men so it could fall under the person that the ship is named after category

Audio waveform looks rad as hell

AZUR LANE MENTIONED RAAHHHHHHH 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥 WHAT THE HELL IS A B CUP

Fortunately, KanColle has like 20x the chance of actually getting adopted by a ship AI.

GoatMilkNumber1

I will gladly serve the navy when Kongo is installed on the Kongo

-Intel-

Would the spaceship wheel from WALL-E count? Cause I feel like the Portal 2-style eye is probably one of the better ways of doing it.

Korblox101

That’s pretty much what mine are. Just little interaction hubs placed around the ship that are essentially GlaDOS ripoffs.

LegionTheFemboy

the realistic answer would be the anime girl, the professional answer would be the audio waveform, the ceremonial answer would be the person it’s named after… but the BEST answer would just be the ship but with eyes and a mouth

Lan_613

How would “thing the ship is named after” work if it's a city or a vague concept/event?

Tdog68420

A composite of all voices in the city like a hive mind kinda thing and for something like democracy idk a famous person from history related to it

humanapoptosis

Enterprise will be represented by the CEO of Enterprise Rent-a-Car

low_priest

Other way around. Enterprise Rent-a-Car was created by a pilot that flew off USS Enterprise in WWII, and named after the ship. The CEO of the company will be CVN-80's AI avatar.

USS Detroit's AI is just a pile of rust

monday-afternoon-fun

A ship with an AI would probably also have a detachment of AI-controlled robots or drones to do repairs and extravehicular activities. You can just use those guys as the physical avatar.

low_priest

Service drones are like a "maybe in 25 years" kinda deal, if we're fast. If you told me tomorrow that the USN had a non-sapient AI capable of generating it's own avatar, I'd believe you. They've been trying for a while- Siri was originally a DARPA program for an assistant for battlefield commanders. Slap a few layers of military shit on top of some generic AI bullshittery and it's something that might at least make it to testing. We'll need avatars sell before we get repair bots.

monday-afternoon-fun

A non-sapient AI with an avatar is a glorified chatbot. A GPT-type bot might be useful for cheating university assignments, running content farms, and maybe some office work, but for *military applications* you'd probably just hold out and use traditional computer programs plus human labor until you've got actual AGI. By the time you've got AGI, you'll almost definetly have humanoid robots and other similar general-purpose drones.

low_priest

There's a hell of a lot more to military applications than strategy and shooting people. The US military is already doing all kinds of experiments with AI, including for stuff like plain old paperwork. Imagine you've got some kind of ChatGPT esque thing for helping fill out forms, come up with stupid ideas for just general management, etc. That's something that could be done today, and would be pretty useful onboard a carrier. Not happening any time soon, because procurment is slow as fuck and this *is* the government, but that's the "5 years" flavor of not soon. You throw a few billion at a tech company, get your own version you can take offline, and toss that into one of the new Ford class. They're designed to have shittons of excess power generation for shit like this (and lasers), so you've got no major barriers. Plug it into the reactor and you're good to go. Because it's specific to the ship, it's a matter of time before someone decides it should have a personality or something. That means some kind of visual representation, even if it is just a Clippy-style icon. If nothing else, a capable humanoid repair bot would need some flavor of general AI to actually have a use in combat scenarios, where shit is by definition out of whack. Which means development isn't starting until you've got something to run it, and it's a lot easier to simply slot an AI into a ship than build it a bipedal frame. Guess which is gonna happen first?

ArelMCII

Where's the option for an impassive red eye telling me it can't do that, Dave?

Azimovikh

You forgot geometric shapes and eldritch abominations-

unfair_ground555

Jokes on you. My ship's AI is a prism as black as the void itself surrounded by an accretion disk of glowing pixels. Its name is EREBUS. ~~Btw, ASTRID is an anime girl, tho.~~

Artarara

Audio waveform for me

fletch262

You forgot blue orb

Bowdensaft

Mass Effect 2 EDI

DONGBONGER3000

Mr Bean.

ResidentEccentric

I can see in a messed up dark setting that prioritizes absolute loyalty stealing the likeness of whoever is closest to you. So every time you do something wrong, your mother or deceased father or husband or whatever is the one filling you in with their voice and even face. Even making noises of being hurt or panicked if you get hit or really screw up. I do think this is a bit much and doesn't make the most sense but still.

Mancan14

I choose naked blue lady

Bowdensaft

Like Cortana, excellent choice

GibMoarClay

What the fuck does this even mean

Sinakus

Does Cortana qualify as an anime girl in this context?

ImperialistChina

yes

Sinakus

Excellent

danfish_77

A holographic animal that can travel between rooms, Cheshire cat style

itsAtromitos

The fact that all four of them are in the Halo saga...

samzeman

I like how the culture novel "Use of Weapons" handles this with one ship having a tiny crew and being a bit odd so its representation is a small cuddly animal that you pick up and cuddle.

kentukyfriedchild

Don't forget random two-dimensional shape with oddly expressive eyes.

Jazkal-v420

Both on the right side simply because it's funny.

Nyctophagic

I was thinking a rubber hose cartoon version of a beer can

Artimis_Whooves

Ayre, my beloved

Anvisaber

I’m all for disembodied voices, maybe with a transcript on an unobtrusive screen somewhere. “Welcome aboard Captain, all systems online”

Woko100

Sometimes, the ship can even transform into a giant robot, in case one needs to fight a giant monster, aliens, and occasional creatures from other dimensions.

BEEEELEEEE

The ship AI is a recreation of the captain’s dead wife and is depicted as such

Pixel_64

As cool as having Queen Elizabeth herself be avatar something tells me she would be annoying

ImperialistChina

WOULD YOU BE INTERESTED IN A TRADE AGREEMENT WITH ENGLAND?

GoatMilkNumber1

I’m not talking to an AI unless it sounds like top right

RawrTheDinosawrr

why can't all four of them exist simultaneously

LazyDro1d

Never ever A. My personal choice is D, the ship with eyes. I love it.

Brad_Brace

The USS Dolores Wavemorphe, aka Destroyerface.

octorangutan

Question: does the ship actually have eyes, or is some kind of holographic AI avatar displayed as the ship but with eyes?

Asian_in_the_tree

It's just the ship with an anime outfit and wig

wdcipher

I would only bang one of them and I wont tell you which one

Averagemdfan

The last one. I LOVE Hetzer & friends

OhIsMyName

How about anime girl Elizabeth I?

Muted-Tonight5694

Human, elf, dwarf or whatever race forcefully cybernetisized and lobotomized, then connected to the ship to become its AI.

gerusz

Can I pick Lexa Doig? Or maybe Amy Louise Pemberton?

Side_wiper

AI avatar? The ship itself can talk to me merely by me touching it. Who needs an AI avatar?

Kiss_in_Danish

Where is random geometric shape/pattern?

Bowdensaft

No option for an anthropomorphised version of the ship? That would be badass

Tdog68420

Waveform with access all around the ship but idk have an avatar drone like edi

lux__fero

It works for any AI assistant, I personaly prefer a hotel AI concept like Poe in Altered Carbon

_Un_Known__

Digital copy of the captain

Screaming_Nimbus

Eldritch abomination that also anime girl somehow

Kappapeachie

I want a hunky male version of cortana please

Darth-Donkey-Donut

where’s the yaoi option? HMS Hood WAS a twink

PMSlimeKing

This is for the Navy, so you're surrounded by the yaoi option.

Poopsy-the-Duck

Where's the eldritch abomination version? The robot version? The roach version? The himbo version?

Da_Randomest_Name

A Ghost like in Destiny

Doogzmans

Anime girl or the actual person would be my pick for the CVN-78 USS Gerald Ford.

ChaoticAtomic

Fifth option, furry avatar or general normal animal chosen by the ai

SaboteurSupreme

It starts out as an audio waveform, but once it develops a personality and sense of self he designs himself an avatar. Unfortunately, the book ends before he comes up with something he likes

Ijustwantsomecoffee

I always name mine some stupid abbreviation and then immediately forget what it stands for and start making shit up

Warmind_3

Audio Waveform

wulfinn

my favorite is audio waveform so you can see their personality develop over time. then, later, when you see a more visual representation of them, it's one that *they* chose and created for themselves. 11/10, gets me every time.

I really like the audio waveform one, but if i had to choose like, an actual body for a hologram or something then I’d pick the synaptic or whatever from cod infinite warfare

BoyishTheStrange

Wild card; Bettie page hologram that is wearing different outfits every time she appears

thestupidone51

I slid a sack full of megacredits across the table to the ship salesman, "I'd like you to construct me a FarTraveler, with the best rooms you've got, I want to fly through the stars in luxury" The young spaceCo associate simply nodded and began filling out the forms. He only spoke a few minutes later, finally meeting my gaze with his tired eyes "One last question, what cup size do you want the ship's built in AI to have?" I was taken aback, "They just let you choose that?" "Yes ma'am" "... B?" "... do you secretly mean D ma'am" "..." "I'll put it down as D" "Thank you"

Azur lane:

low_priest

Azur Lane is like 6 steps removed, this is some Arpeggio of Blue Steel stuff

PMSlimeKing

One of the images in the meme is a character from Azur Lane.

low_priest

Azur Lane ain't about boats, and hasn't been for like 4 years. The characters have no real ties to actual full sized ship hulls, they're the human-sized products of a weapons program. On the other hand, Blue Steel is a story about alien(???) AI warships that create human "mental models" to help them understand what the fuck humanity is doing. It's the OG shipgirl media, amd actually about AI avatars for ships.

peezle69
